We just arrived home from an amazing 9 day honeymoon at Excellence Riviera Cancun! We can't say enough great things about the resort. I am a huge researcher, so I spent quite some time monitoring reviews on TripAdvisor for various all-inclusive spots until we decided to book with Excellence.
We were at the resort from April 1-April 11th and I will say, we kind of wished we had stayed the full 2 weeks! I'll break down the review in sections so hopefully what you are looking for you can find in our review!
Rooms: We were in building 3 which is facing the spa and lazy river. At first I thought it may be a little far from 'everything', but it was in the perfect location. From our balcony we could smell the lavender salts from the Spa and hear the faint spa music. It was very tranquil and quiet. We opted for just the basic junior suite with a king bed. We thought if we were unhappy with the basic room, we could always upgrade once we were there. I will say, we never felt the need to upgrade. We were on the 2nd floor and rarely heard of any guests above or below us. The room was decorated for our honeymoon and we were greeted with a great bottle of champagne and roses! The turndown service twice a day was exceptional. Our mini bar was great filled with waters, coke, diet coke, sparkling water and beer as well as a few snacks. I believe our mini bar was actually restocked twice per day! It was great to just grab a coke if we were enjoying some time in the room. People on some reviews commented that the beds were very hard, but we felt the beds were the perfect amount of firm for our liking. We thought if the beds were soft, they would become lumpy and hot over time.
Food: Since this was our first all-inclusive resort, we were completely overwhelmed at first with the amount of food at our fingertips! We learned to pace ourselves quickly. The room service was fantastic and 24hrs a day. We ordered probably 3-4 times throughout our stay and I think the longest we had to wait was 40 mins which wasn't too bad at all considering we had ordered quite a spread. Breakfast at Barcelona was great and the service was always top notch. The omelets were to-die-for. I think we ate enough guacamole for a small army. Our favorite restaurants were Basmati, Chez Isabelle, Spice and probably the Grill. We actually went to Basmati 3 times! We love Indian food and found the food to be very authentic. We never minded waiting for dinner. Some evenings it would be a 20-30 minute wait, but we always got pagers and were able to go and sit outside in the plaza and listen to the nightly entertainment. No complaints there!
Entertainment: We had a great time keeping ourselves busy. We really loved the Michael Jackson show, the Madonna show and the magic show. Really all of the shows were entertaining and they were only 1 hour which didn't lose our interest. There were live music bands multiple times per day playing anything from latin to reggae to classic rock music. It was phenomenal! We enjoyed participating in the bike tour to Puerto Morelos and Daniel was an excellent tour guide.
Alcohol: We never got tired of the different drinks we could try throughout our stay. The service was amazing. We loved the martini bar and Blue - the swim up bar. The drink service on the beach was great as well. Our drinks hardly had a chance to stay empty before someone was around to offer us more! Also, any kind of liquor we wanted, we just asked for. My husband loves Crown Royale and he drank mostly drinks with Crown in it which they had no problem pouring. Just make sure you specify if there is a specific type of alcohol you prefer.
Service: The service was overall excellent! We found that by tipping 1-2 dollars at a time, the servers were very attentive and really took care of us. We never felt obliged to tip, but we were so impressed by the service! There were plenty of people who didn't tip, and I didn't see their service be any less than ours. We had a FANTASTIC dinner one night at Chez Isabelle and at the Grill another night and left 10 bucks each night. The meal would have easily cost my husband and I at least 150 bucks at home. One tip: Make sure you bring small bills to the resort. We came with 20's, 50's and 100's and sometimes had trouble breaking larger bills in order to tip the servers. We know for sure for the next time we will be back!
Excursions: We waited until we got to the resort to book excursions. Mary with Olympus Travel was AWESOME! We didn't want anything longer than a half-day and she really helped us find fun things to do. We did ATV/Zip Lining at Selvatica (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED), snorkeling and visited the mayan ruins of Tulum. All were very much worth it!
All in all we had a FANTASTIC honeymoon and can't wait to go for our first anniversary! We wouldn't change ONE THING!
