Have been going to Karmoy for years to see family and took our first visit here this summer. The entrance and first part of the path was not so inviting or well marked but once we got into it I was impressed at the array of animals and the beautiful landscaping. Our boys age 3&7 had a great time exploring and getting so close to so many of the animals. Small snack house at the back of the park but plenty of small pavilions with picnic tables to enjoy a snack or picnic while enjoying the animals and gardens. Our 7 year old still talks about the reptile house very impressive collection.

Thank Holly B

Hi Holly

Happy to hear you liked our park.
Glad to hear you 7 year old was impressed by the reptiles.
You should tell him to ask if he can hold any snakes next time :D

Best Regards

I have family on Karmøy and have been to the Haugaland Zoo three times. It isn't someplace I would have normally considered going out of my way to see, but if you are in the area and have young children with you, it is a very nicely landscaped park. It really is more of a park than a zoo. A park with peacocks and an odd assortment of other not-particularly-exotic animals (like alpacas and zebu). Exotic to Karmøy, certainly, but only a zoologist can really appreciate the difference between a cow and a zebu if you ask me!

But there are some entertaining parrots, and the meerkats run freely. A few goats for petting, some snakes and turtles. It falls short on signposting (there is none), so even during our third visit I wandered around wondering if I had seen everything or if I was on the right path to get to the exit. They could do with some printed maps or at least some arrows pointing the way around. A few of the enclosures had some wikipedia-ish information tacked on them (in Norwegian), but I suppose they know their audience is mostly 6 year olds who don't care for facts.

Where the place shines is in it's landscaping which makes the whole visit really worth the entrance fee (not cheap, but then, what is?). There are maybe a half dozen separate picnic areas, secluded with benches, where if you bring a snack you'll feel pleasantly isolated from the world and your family can watch the swans and peacocks as if you owned the place. A small cafe sells coffee and ice cream. The toilets are exceptionally well maintained and clean. No gift shop means no unnecessary commercialism, stark contrast to the Aquarium in Bergen where you can't get in or out without walking through a minefield of whiny kids.

So if you are looking for an outdoor activity with young kids on a nice day, the Haugaland Zoo is a great choice for Northern Karmøy. Maybe just don't tell your kids it's a "zoo" so they don't get their hopes up for giraffes and elephants. :) Bring some snacks and plan on admiring the gardens as much as the animals!

Hei Celina

Mvh
