Review of Doot Doot Doot

Doot Doot Doot
Price range: US$62 - US$98
Description: Jackalope Hotel's daring dining experience, Doot Doot Doot, offers contemporary, upscale dining. In the spirit of the on-site winery's single vineyard heritage, Doot Doot Doot's dishes are designed to offer a faithful expression of site, with a menu that draws on seasonal offerings from the hotel's kitchen garden and select Mornington Peninsula producers. Diners have the choice of ordering four dishes a la carte or opting for an eight-course set menu spread, all with the option of matched Willow Creek and international wines. Jackalope Hotels' Executive Chef, Guy Stanaway, adds, "the tasting menu offers a respect for the feast, contrasted by a disrespect for the familiar. Time-honoured techniques meet culinary curiosity, in dishes that are methodical yet explorative and designed to evoke a unique sense of place." Doot Doot Doot expands on the hotel's narrative, alchemy, and has been designed to reflect the alchemistic phase of fermentation. An eight-by-ten metre lighting installation by Melbourne-based chandelier designer, Jan Flook, sets the tone with a 10,000 lamp chandelier that creates the surreal sensation of fermenting wine bubbling above.

What can I say about this place but great food. Recommendation is to have the paired wines with the 5 course meal.
The wines and the meals have a story behind each pairing.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The scenery tops it off.

The dessert is my favourite meal

Book in advance as it gets busy during the weekends.

All credit to the family behind this creation of a hotel in the middle of a farming district. The menu was delicious but limited by an only choice of main course. Great value when you look at what was served..local produce with a modern touch. An enormous amount has been spent on the restaurant but the position in the building is not ideal - it should capture the view of the vineyard rather than the carpark at lunch. The staff are very efficient and friendly with many serving at different times. The open kitchen shows a friendly team working together. Well worth the visit. Next time I will try the casual dining for the view of the region and the bar for an eclectic drink.

Let’s get to the point- the food is just fabulous and for $98 for 5 courses at this level plus the snacks, pallet cleansers etc thrown in, is a steal. The food here is on par with our all time favorite Ten Minutes by tractor.

But here is where the level playing field between these two restaurant ends. The service is very friendly and efficient but does not have the class of Graham and his crew at 10 minutes. They definitely need to pinch Jacques from 10 minutes and get their wines right!! With all the fabulous wines of Victoria to end up with their wine list left us gob smacked. Their sparking Rose was literally undrinkable at $15/glass as an example.

Then the hardware itself. This restaurant could be in Hong Kong, Shanghai or any other glitzy place in the world. The glass art installation on the ceiling is glorious but the view of the vineyard on a day of bright sunshine and 21c would beat it every time! But we sat in a dark room overlooking the car park with sheer drapes protecting our eyes! While the unoccupied function area and toilet had the breathtaking view- surely they just have inverted what should have happened.

The remainder of the structure is just standard boutique hotel stuff found anywhere in the world with no reference to where we are.

The casual dining area looked super and will surely be where we would visit.

I had heard a lot about this and then was engaged by a client to speak and perform for their conference which took place at Jackalope. The gala dinner at which I sang was at Doot Doot Doot. The service was excellent and the 4 course tasting menu was quite delicious. Very light, creative and full of interestings flavours. They substituted a delicious fish for the lamb as I don't eat red meat. The dessert with hazelnut and berries was divine.
And the room is very dark and theatrical with its super modern lighting feature on the roof.
I definitely recommend this for a special night out on the Peninsula.
