The Room - 225
One of the most important things when it comes to hotels for me is the bed. I can say I had one of the best sleeps I have had in a long time in the Queen Size bed. It was soft and very comfortable. Like how you imagine sleeping on a cloud would be like. Ya know, without that whole falling through it thing.
There was a flat screen TV, business desk and couch. It seemed great. However, we moved the couch to watch a movie on our laptop and there was all this garbage underneath. Not a good look. So when we left the hotel, we left the couch where it was so that the housekeeping knew to give it a good clean. Also, the view is not something to expect here. It is a view of the bus terminal downstairs. But I guess that is what you get for a city hotel.
Bathroom was standard. Toilet behind the door and great bath products that were replenished each day. It was a shower/bathtub for your choosing.
Dining options were not limited. You could choose from 24 hour room service, go to the restaurant and bar downstairs, or choose from many of the places nearby.
I chose to try out the room service. Ordered some penne pasta. It came upstairs in record time. However, it was mediocre to say the least. But it did the job.
I did not get the pleasure of dining in the hotel’s One Restaurant and Bar, however, I noticed they were very accommodating for Easter. They adjusted the hours and took note that many other places around town would be closed. The staff even let you know of places to eat outside the hotel that were open.
We chose to eat out for Easter Brunch. We headed to Gus’s where you will see the BF enjoyed (and was taken back by) his huge meal.
Gus’s is a Canberra landmark. It was the first outdoor dining establishment in the city and has been around since 1967. There is even a plaque on the ground to recognize the original Vienna immigrant Augustin ‘Gus’ Petersilka.
Amenities & Facilities
Heated Indoor pool, Sauna, Hot Tub, Mini Bar, Gym, 24 hour service, Wi-Fi internet (30 minutes free in lobby otherwise pay for it in your room), movies (surcharge) and computers/business lounge.
The pool was nice. It was great that it was indoors because it was just under pool temperature outside. Didn’t feel that heated though. Also, the Sauna was broken and out of order. But we relaxed in the hot tub and enjoyed the company of National Folk Festival attendees.
The internet worked great. We got the 24 hour pass for unlimited usage and since here in Australia you have to pay per byte it was nice that we were able to update Kiwi BF’s software on his computer.
I am a sucker for a great location and amazing hospitality. Although the Sauna was broken and my room service didn’t taste that great, I give the Novotel a thumbs up. There were always smiles from the staff, despite having to work over Easter Weekend and I slept like a baby. The place is centrally located, so just take the bus in and they have parking available.
