Stay over on a Thursday night. The place was humming and singing with people in Canberra for a choir convention. Dinner in the main restaurant was pleasant and the food very well prepared. Service was friendly and efficient. The bar is also a good place to a drink with colleuges and clients. A good choice of beers and wines. Decor is modern and looks new.

The standard rooms are a good size and clean. The bathroom is clean and well appointed. The shower has good water flow and gets the job done. Only comment here is the awkward placement of the bathroom door. It just gets in the way. If it was sliding or swung the other way it would have been more utility.

As a business hotel, the absence of free Wi-Fi in the lobby or rooms is ancient history. Can't work out how it costs $30 per day for broadband Internet via a blue cable. Hard to justify as a business expense. This stop me from using the service and sticking to my 3G iPad, which is a limited way for working with reports.

Heating in the room was difficult to to operate or may be I am not smart enough. Ended up having a cold night. A simpler and user friendly system would be better. Especially when this is not a inexpensive stay. Nevertheless less the bed was very comfortable.

As for costs, I think it was on the high side for what you get. The total cost was $364 for one night. $259 for the standard room. $71 for two course dinner. $29 on breakfast (full buffet, no cafe coffee) and the rest on credit card fees. Suggest you try behind the hotel in Marcus Clarke Street for a better deal on a meal. Did not try, but it looked busy and less pricey.

Overall, it was acceptable and a good place to stay and eat but on the touch pricier end of the spectrum.

Your stay coincided with the "Sweet Adeline " acapella choral event ,with visitors from all states visiting Canberra. The frosty mornings at this time of the year were met with the delightful harmonouus voices practicing in diferent areas of the hotel bringing many warm smiles to our other guests.
Thank you for also bringing to my attention the areas you found us wanting .Having just completed our refurbishment program last month ,the observations from our guests is always welcome .
I am at a loss as to how you were given the impression that we charge for wifi in the public areas of the hotel. This service is accessable to all guest and patrons via logging our access code number, available from the front desk. I am also pleased to advise the by the end of June all 205 guest rooms and suites will also have access to wi fi at a modest fee.

We stayed at Rydges Lakeside Canberra 12th May to 16th May. We have never stayed in a Rydges before and this place has just been renovated. About 6 million dollars was spent but maybe they should have spent 10 % more. Don’t get me wrong it looks good, but attention to detail did not happen on the 11th Floor. I would like to see this room in 5 years to see how it holds up. The curtains are a fraction to short, the tap in bathroom not straight, paint job a bit cheap flaking off and outside the lines, a crooked power point. One of my irritations, is dirty remote controls, see image. There was no bottle opener and we did ask for one from the mini bar person, but it never arrived. The water pressure was not good (very low) and there was no safe. On the positive side which are many the TV was really easy to hook up to the laptop. It was bare feet clean (able to walk around without socks on) with wonderful beds. I did not have a dream in the Rydges “Dream bed”, but did have three great night sleep. We did not hear any external noise, a great shower head, trendy bathroom even though it is a bit cramped, and lacking space and storage. Overall Rydges is great value for the dollars. The view from the 11th floor was great, one of the best views we have had in Canberra. We will be staying here again and I am looking forward to seeing what the renovation will look like in a few years’ time.

Room Tip: Higher floor
