We were recommended the Y hotel by a friend who lived in Sydney, as he had had friends stay there who found it clean and reasonably priced.
First up, the location is fantastic. Less than a minute from Hyde park and right in the center of the city. It would be hard to find a better located hotel in the city.
We were on a budget, so opted for a shared facilities room. The room itself was small, but well equipped with tea and coffee facilities, fridge, air conditioning and a television that pulled out from the wardrobe. It was also very clean.
The shared facilities were the most disappointing aspect of the hotel. There were separate facilities for men and women, but the men's only contained two toilets and one shower. Another shower at least, would have been useful given that there were quite a few rooms sharing these facilities (the female facilities had two showers). Although, to be fair, there was only one occasion where the shower was occupied when I wanted to use it. The shower itself was the main disappointment. Despite shower gel and shampoo dispensers being provided in the shower, it is the water pressure that really lets it down. The shower was no more than a trickle, and the temperature sometimes fluctuated. It was also occasionally affected by another hotel guest flushing the toilet.
That was the only negative I could find with this hotel though. A contintental breakfast was supplied, offering Croissants, toast and cereals, or there was the option to upgrade to a cooked breakfast for $5 per person which was good value.
Internet facilities were available, but were an extra charge. We used the internet to check in for our return flights, and the cost was reasonable at $1 for 15 minutes, and 50c per printed sheet.
