“Great accommodation”
Reviewed 24 May 2012 via mobile

We stayed at the Lord Nelson for a long weekend. After searching for good accommodation in Sydney for a reasonable price I found this place via trip advisor. We booked a room with an ensuite and the room was amazing, the room was big, and very clean. There is an awesome vibe to this place.
The location was great too, loads of fantastic restaurants close by and really easy walk to circular quay and CBD.
The staff were fantastic, next we go to Sydney I wouldn't bother staying any where else.

We were very excited to stay in Sydney's oldest hotel which has its very own micro brewery and our experience was overall very good. The Hotel and pub have tonnes of character and regular drinkers to match. In the oldest part of Sydney the Lord Nelson is a rare opportunity to escape the corporate hotel culture, however it is a little on the expensive side. Our room was large and well equipped with a god size bathroom. The only downside was its proximity to reception (our door was right opposite he reception area) which made it noisy from early morning onwards. This wasn't helped by next door's building renovations which started rather early. Breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice to eat whilst soaking up the days news. We ate in the pub and were very impressed by the quality and value which was matched by their own brews, well worth a try. Would I return, no. Would I recommend this hotel, possibly. Would I eat and drink there again, yes.

Room Tip: Away from reception

The location of this hotel cannot be faulted. You are literally two minutes walk from a great view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Breakfast is also quite good (although the selection included in the complimentary breakfast is not great).

However, the problem with this hotel is that it is sold as a little boutique hotel. It's almost there, but not quite. It's a good, solid bed and breakfast.

One example is that, I required WIFI to get some work done. There was no way (even though I desperately tried) I could connect to the WIFI in the hotel or the vicinity, and using the hotel's computer was not an option.

The rooms are almost boutique standard - but need a lick of paint and general spruce up.

A lot of care has gone into the dining room area and the food at the Hotel is really, really great. If the same attention went into the rooms, there would be no stopping this hotel!!

The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel is a great accomodation option for travellers who want to stay in a reasonably price hotel that's just busting with character. As an example of how iconic this place is: the day we arrived, a commercial for Tourism Australia was being filmed in the microbrew pub on the main floor!

Arrival and departure logistics: It's ~ a 1 km walk (mostly uphill) from Circular Quay train station - which is a $16.20 and ~ 20 minute train ride from the International terminal. The entire walk is very scenic, and a great way to walk off a long plane ride! You enter through the pub (the door is open, even at 8 AM) and walk up 2 flights of stairs to the office.

Though check-in time is 1 PM and international flights get you there by around 8 AM, they'll let you leave your luggage in the office until you can check-in. Same is true if your flight is after check-out.

I stayed at the Lord Nelson in 2008, as it was recommended by an Australian friend who stays there all the time. The experience was so great that I had to return; my husband and I stayed there at both the beginning and end of our trip, and a friend stayed in a room down the hall.

There's lots of good reviews with many details that I won't repeat in this write-up; below are just a few things that I haven't seen in other reviews that are worth noting.

In all rooms, the huge brick walls make this place pretty much completely soundproof between rooms - a real treat compared to most hotels I've stayed in! The vanities in all washrooms are huge, which is a bonus as well. The en suite rooms are MUCH larger than those with a shared washroom. As many reviewers mention, the pub is a real attraction and has good food and great beer.

Specific issues on a room-by-room basis: I stayed in room 304 in 2008, and thought the skylight was a nice touch I found that the very early sunrise plus my jet lag were a bad combination. Plus it was summer so the AC fans were going all the time, and these are located outside the bathroom window of 304. This time around, we stayed in room 205 on our first night. Like 304, it's the furthest you can get from the pub's main doors and also is at the end of the hall so there's no hallway traffic either. On our second stay, we had room 201 which was HUGE - there's even a dining table with four chairs - and has a view of Sydney Harbour Bridge through some trees, so it would be a clear view in the winter when the trees lose their leaves completely. However, there's a plumbing line through the ceiling near the bed, so when upstairs guests flush or use the shower you get a huge "whoosh." Also, it's right across from the office so there's a bit more noise from the hallway.

Minor concerns aside, this hotel is wonderful. We spent 5 nights there in total and loved its character, the service, the pub, and the convenient location. The only transit we took in this time was by ferry, and then by train to/from the airport. We hope to be back at the Lord Nelson again soon!

Room Tip: Room 201 is large and has a behind-the-trees view of Sydney Harbour Bridge, but also has drainage pi...

We were not sure where to stay in Sydney. Our friends recommended that we stay in the "Rocks". So we looked for a quaint hotel for a reasonable price. The Lord Nelson was perfect. It is not a typical hotel with an entrance. Rather one walks through the microbrewery up the stairs to the "office". The room was spacious with modern conveniences. We thought that it may be noisy at night with the bar downstairs. However, with solid floors and solid stone walls it was quiet, very quiet. The bar closes rather early too. The bar had the best beer in Australia! I like full flavor beers and it was frustrating that most beers everywhere else had a "light" flavor.
The hotel is convenient for walking across the bridge, down to waterway, skywalk and opera house. We took a water taxi to get to the opera one night.
We will definitely stay here next time. The price was very reasonable when compared to other hotels in the area.

Room Tip: Corner room
