“Opulence”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

It is in an ordinary street with a big monorail track across the road. Totally ordinary. Then you get a hint of what's inside as you enter the ticket hall. Inside is another era. You can't help thinking of movie stars in gowns and tuxedos attending opening night premiers of black and white movies or the first night of a Noel Cowerd play.

“Grand Ol' Picture Theatre”
Reviewed 15 February 2012

Built in 1929, this is a lovelly example of how to preserve building and retain some heritage (something otherwise badly missing in glass tower desert that is downtown Sydney). If you can, try and catch one of the tours. The interior decoration is superb, featuring Gothic, Italian and Art Deco design. And check out the four tonne chandelier - supposedly the second largest on the planet. If only the city had saved many of the other picture theatres that have perished.

“You Need a Makeover, State Theatre”
Reviewed 9 February 2012

The foyer is grand, but the interior of the State needs a compete makeover, from new seats, to fresh carpet and a paintover. It feels dark and dingy and the concert was stale too.

“A gorgeous old theatre!”
Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is a gorgeous old (by Sydney standards) theatre! A really nice, and fairly intimate venue.
