“Botanical Gardens Delight”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

Just across the road from the botanical gardens and that provides an extensive area of interest and peace. A smaller hotel with outstanding service and a wonderful dining experience in a cosy restaurant. Close to everything but in a place of its own.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us and other travelers.

Our entire team at Royal on the Park works so hard to live up to the expectations of our guests and our professional but personable team fit our “club-like” boutique property perfectly.

I will be sure to pass on your thanks to our various teams as well as our Chefs who do take delight in providing what we believe is the best hotel dining in Brisbane (for more reviews please be sure to visit our Walnut Restaurant page on TripAdvisor!).

Than you once again and we do look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Regards

Nick

I'm definitely not a fan of the hotel's retro style (though others may like it and it is, overall, comfortable).

What I find completely unacceptable - and why I and no-one else from my company will ever stay here again - is the cost of Internet. The charge is $27.50 for 24 hours, which is bad enough, however it is shaped after 200MB to 50Kb/s, making is essentially unusable. My laptop synchronises cloud files, so I surpassed 200MB in less than an hour. For context, 200MB in 24 hour is equivalent to 6GB per month, far lower than any home Internet plan currently available, and a ridiculous amount for business users. You can pay absurd amounts to keep reasonable bandwidth up to 1GB, but it would be cheaper to check out and go to another hotel.

So, if you use the Internet, or you have any kind of sympathy for people who do, do NOT stay at this hotel. This gouging of customers is completely unacceptable.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your opinion.

Firstly let me advise that our current internet pricing and data allowances are inline with major hotels in the Brisbane CBD. The reason hotels in general employ these pricing & data structures is to discourage monopolization of bandwidth that occurs when many guests simultaneously watch online TV, sync large cloud accounts or download movies. Our records indicate that less than 5% of our guests utilise their data allowances – and if they do they are offered a free of charge extension at a shaped (128kps) speed, or the option of paying 10c per megabyte to continue at the unshaped speed. All guests are also advised before connection regarding the limits to allow time to temporarily stop any synchronizations.

Having said that, Royal on the Park will be the first hotel in Brisbane to install an Ethernet-over-Fibre dedicated internet connection (with 100mb speed – the fastest available in Australia) and once this goes live we will not only offer the fastest internet speeds of any hotel, but we will also provide an unlimited data cap at full speed to all our guests. This upgraded service will be provided free of charge to all guests and we do expect it to be live by September.

Kind Regards,

Nick

I have been a long arm regular at the Royal. Over the last few visits I have noticed there have been a number of changes of staff which seems to have effected the atmosphere of the place. The rooms do not seem to be as clean as they use to be. They do not seem to be as friendly or as helpful. Pricing has crept up and are not at the value of some of the other hotels in the area. I guess it is just the little things but they are really what matter at the end of the day.

Room Tip: Either or the park view or the city view rooms are goods

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experiences – your thoughts are truly valued to us as a return guest.

Whilst we do enjoy some of the industry’s lowest turnover of our team members, we have recently expanded some of our teams and I do apologise if you found some of them not as friendly or helpful as our existing staff – our training processes are very in-depth and it can take many months for a new team members to be up to our final ‘royal standard’.

With regards to your room cleanliness I will be sure to share your findings with our Housekeeping team at their daily briefing tomorrow.

I certainly do appreciate that it’s the ‘little things’ that matter in your home away from home so I would please invite you to contact me direct at the hotel to discuss your review further. Having read your kind review in January of this year, I do wish to re-install your faith in our hotel.

Kind Regards,

Nick

Came here after a flight from the states.
Great service from start to end. Close to many restaurants and a safe place to walk around.
Rooms of good size. Modern, clean and nice bathroom.
Needed sleep on arrival and bed very good as well as very quiet.

Not cheap, but probably average price for the down town location.
Would not hesisitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: I had a room facing the street, which gave a partial view of he botanic gardens. Very nice.

My husband and I stayed here for 2nights and it was delicious.
The king size bed and wonderful pillows made for a wonderful child free weekend.
We would reccomend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in Brisbane. Great family hotel as well.
Directly opp the botanical gardens, we hired bikes there and rode to South Bank,Kangaroo Point, West End and more.
Staff were very professional and the Buffet breakfast with Nespresso is a must.
Waling distance to everything.
The only downfal for this room was the very very small bath. I was hoping to have one but it was very shallow.

Room Tip: if you book a city view room ask for a room at least level 3 or above, higher the better.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your great review!

Our location is second to none in Brisbane and it’s such a pleasure to be able to share it with all.

We are pleased to see that you approve of the addition of Nespresso machines into the Walnut Restaurant for Breakfast – just this week 20 more have arrived for distribution into our Suites and Premium rooms so make sure you ask about this next time you book.

Once again, thank you for your stay with us.

Many years ago, when travelling from Western Queensland into Brisbane, my family would always stay at what was then the Park Royal, it offered some of the greenest views for a CBD hotel and the pool was more than adequate for few morning laps.

I had tickets for 'Tosca' at the performing arts centre on Southbank but also a dinner date with friends in the Queen St Mall, I decided to reacquaint myself with the Park Royal as I was looking for somewhere nice and central, with a touch of elegance about the place. I was not disappointed.

Over the years the hotel aged relatively gracefully but as some of the pickier travellers out there began to it feel it was getting a touch run down, the (now) "Royal on the Park" responded with an apparently successful campaign of rejuvenation after the 2011 floods.

When I stayed there at the end of 2011 the rooms had been renovated and they were quite classy. Tastefully decorated and furnished with quality items, the beds being a standout in my opinion. The view out over the botanic gardens, with those magnificent fig trees really helped else my angst at being in "the city". The hallways and lifts were, I believe, the last item on the renovation list and hopefully this is why the lobby lifts moved at glacial pace!

Room service was quick and rated well on my traditional club sandwich challenge, though the fruit plate was a little skimpy considering the price, the fruit itself was fresh and sweet though. Breakfast is of the quality and range that you should in a good hotel, being a buffet of hot and cold meats, cheeses, fruits and the like.

Yes, it's a little expensive (though what classic CBD hotel isn't?) but it's also a classy indulgence with a view and well worth your consideration.

Room Tip: Go for the Garden Rooms where ever possible.

Dear Guest,

Your review was such a pleasure to share with our team.

We are known as the ‘Grand Dame’ of Brisbane accommodation and as we were the first hotel in Brisbane, it was important to us to keep the club like classical feel during our refurbishments.

We have worked tirelessly to provide a hotel that marries ‘old world charm’ with new world technology to show that despite the age of the hotel, we do provide cutting edge hospitality. Our latest and greatest example of this is our installation of iPads into our Suites and Premium rooms.

Our team will also soon be going mobile with our porters using their iPads for check in on the driveway, and our housekeeping’s ensuing rooms are turned around in the fastest possible way and to the highest standards utilising their iPads whilst roaming the guest floors.

We have a long and illustrious heritage and this also shows true with our team – we are proud to have some of the lowest employee turnover rates in the industry and we have many team members who share your memories of the ‘Park Royal Days’. We will this year share in celebrations with a number of our team continuing through their second decade of employment as well as a very exclusive club of “three timers” (staff whom have left the hotel and come back – three times at a minimum!)

Thank you once again for your kind words.

We stayed at the Royal on the park once before and were happy then. This time they gave us a beautiful room overlooking the botanical garden and we really appreciated that upgrade. Location is great, within easy walking distance to the centre of the CBD.
Happy Customers.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your experiences with other TripAdvisor reviewers.

I was pleased to see that you have returned to the hotel with fond memories and that we were able to provide an upgrade for this stay. Our Park View rooms are always very popular due to their floor to ceiling windows showcasing the beautiful Botanic Gardens and their famous fig trees.

Thank you once again.
