it's a good way to learn about Cairns' past. i enjoyed a bike tour guide, i was told how those early pioneers struggled to survive and their burial had to be moved locations. without their sacrifices we wouldn't be able to enjoy what Cairns is today.

This Cemetary is charming. Well kept old graves. Metal wrought iron surrounds on some if the graves and elaborate headstones. It's a special place for this city to cherish.

Very interesting to find out who were Cairns pioneers. Amazing what the life expectancy was and what people died from at the time. Stone masonary on some of the graves is fantastic. Well worth a visit only ten minutes walk from Cairns central.

The cemetery is a small, quiet oasis on the edge of the city. There is a bit of historical information in rotunda, including a list of names of all those buried in the grounds and their age at death. This, plus the grave markers, show the diversity of origins of the pioneers and the relatively you ages of many reflects what must have been a harsh environment at the time. On a lighter note, an extract from the local paper commenting on the choice of location is direct and blunt journalism of a type rarely, if ever, seen today.

The graves are in need of attention but some show an insite into Cairns history and the people that lost their lives building the area. Certainly worth a look.
