“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2012

We stayed for two night on the Easter weekend and it was our second time staying there. The rooms are beautiful and we had the best view of the city. We were in the 20th floor and it was so quiet. The bed was so comfortable and the pillows were the best I have slept on. The location is great and the service was as usual terrific. I left my charger when I checked out and when I phoned the next day they told me they would send it out to me. It arrived the next day registered post. I could go on and on about this hotel because its my favourite and I have stayed in lots of hotels in the city .

Was I staying at the same hotel as all the people who raved about the comfortable bedding? Perhaps I was unlucky but my bed was terrible! Hard and the feather pillows a nightmare!
Housekeeping were obviously pushed for time as tea/coffee/sugar were not replenished in the 3 nights that we stayed, the cups and spoons were not cleaned, I found this out when I went to move the spoon and it was stuck, and a cup that I found to be broken [after I had made a cup of coffee] was not replaced, minor things to be sure but they all add up.
Would I stay here again, no. Would I recommend it, no.
The price you pay for a car park view, the small rooms, the shower with pressure so weak you have to run around to catch the drips, the price gouging for ANY extra. For example, I packed the wrong phone charger, and they wanted $11 to lend me one, come on this is meant to be 5 star.
I,m with bweebschan, next time I,m in Melbourne I will stay at the Marriott, a much better hotel.

The hotel itself is very elegant and modern, our room included a king size bed and spa bath, The bed was extremely comfortable. Although our tv was not working when we arrived, a technician came up within minutes of placing a call to reception. Walking distance to pretty much all attractions. Views from our window were perfect views of the Melbourne city. The staff fulfilled all of our requests during our stay and were very friendly too!

When we arrived to check in (late Friday night) we were somewhat apprehensive due to the excessive noise coming from the bar on the next floor. We expected a slightly more refined welcome in a luxury hotel and could barely hear the reception staff. We were however very impressed when we arrived in our room as it was both quiet and luxurious. The bed was very comfortable, the room large and the bathroom very well laid out. I was however somewhat disappointed that it didn't have a bath. The service throughout the hotel was excellent. We only ate in the breakfast restaurant on the top floor but were very impressed with both the service and the quality of the food. My only complaint was the slightly excessive security surrounding the lifts. It is only possible to access your own floor with your lift key card meaning if you wish to visit friends staying on another floor they need to meet you in the lobby to escort you back up to their floor.

Our first stay at Crown Metropol was two years back and at that time I was wowed by the hotel. We stayed in a basic room which was gorgeous and had great views of the city, plus we were welcomed with champagne and chocolates. This time we decided to splurge on a Loft Room and had high expectations for an equally good stay. Unfortunately our second stay was disappointing and we won't be back.

The good things first: The hotel is sleek and stylish, from the lobby to the rooms. Service was generally good and you're very near to the Southbank cafes and the Crown shops and facilities. Our Loft Room was modern and stylish with a spacious living room and a hugh bathtub, complete with a plasma TV for a relaxing soak. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and the spa service was excellent.

And for the letdowns. The hotel was packed with guests every day. This meant long queues at the check in counters, at the lifts and for valet parking. The hotel staff did their best but the large number of guests at the lobby and the pool area was a bit of a put off and the hotel felt noisy and impersonal. Not sure if this was the case because it was the Easter holidays but not appealing in any case.

Considering the Loft Room is a few categories higher than the basic room, we weren't too impressed with our experience. The views from our living room and bedroom were lousy, mainly facing the carpark and the roof of the crown complex. The sofa was a little discolored and we were surprised to see that the room didn't provide bottles of water or basic cutlery and plates, considering there was a dining area in the room. No champagne or chocolates this time, and the exorbitant rate didn't even include complimentary wifi. The rest of the bathroom was great but the shower area was the biggest letdown. The shower room looked like one of those in the public pools or gyms and the shower pressure was ridiculously weak. Not what you expect from a luxury hotel and from one of their best rooms too.

Comparisons might be a little unfair but we stayed at the Marriott Hotel for the first part of our trip and while the rooms were not as plush, the overall experience was more intimate and pleasant, and at a much better value too. Will certainly choose the Marriott over the Metropol for our next stay.

January trip to Crown Metropol, after dud taxi driver dropped us next door by mistake at Promenade. Long queues at Check-in certainly should be improved. Only one or two staff knew what they were doing and did it well, the others more interior deco than professionals. Nice room, quiet, no bath tub-reminds of good private hospital with big tiled shower stall. Weird restaurant bar set-up-can be bypassed entirely. IGA next door. There is walk to trams. Lots of choice for Crown Casino complex just across overhead pedestrian bridge. Lunch at Nobu with Andy Murray walking in was a bonus. There is no need to leave the whole building as everything is self contained. Like being on a large ship without the sea-sickness!

Room Tip: High floor, ask for view of fire display on the promenade

Although this hotel is fautless in it's facilities we felt that it lacked atmosphere. Our luxe room and bathroom was very generous in size and the bed and bedding was SUPER comfortable. For this price, we felt the bathroom should have had a bath.Unless you're happy to remain in the Crown complex for your stay, it is a bit of a walk to the city centre and other attractions. The staff are helpful but they are only forth coming with information on high-end Crown restaurants and facilities and don't offer information on more casual options. The pool is well worth a dip in-views are incredible from it.Tip- Try and get a high level room away from lifts and ice machine rooms.
