It was getting late. We didn't have any reservations and happen to find this restaurant. Yes, we were pleasantly surprised. Although the menu was limited, it was sufficient.

The escargots were the best that we have eaten so far. Perfect texture & taste. My filet was a little too done for medium & they changed it for me. The replacement piece was great. Cousselet - we didn't know what that was but decided to try. Basically duck in baked beans. Taste wise, it was ok but not my favorite.

The décor is lovely and very welcoming - linen, lovely glasses, tables well spaced, muted tones. The staff are all French, with strong accents that you could listen to all day, but also with that typical French dismissal of others, from the senior wait-staff to the more junior - for example one of our entrees was forgotten and unfairly blamed on the junior wait staff.

We took the express menu, so not so many choices, none of them memorable, and not very express either. The mains took an age to come - we arrived at 12.30 and the mains were served at 2pm - so that some of our party had to leave before desert arrived.

In all, there was a feeling of luxury about the restaurant as we entered, the food was quite good, it was quite expensive, the service made us a little uncomfortable, and it was very slow indeed. Nice, but I won't be rushing back.

Looking to catch up with some friends while in Melbourne we came across The French Brasserie and their Express Lunch menu option which includes two courses and a glass of wine. This is a restaurant that lives up to its name with all French dining staff, and good cuisine for a reasonable price. We were asked if we were truly "express" or if we had an extra moment. Picking out our courses, the waiting staff were helpful and were obviously in the Christmas mood as we spent 2 hours and were offered two extra rounds of drinks on the house. We were asked if we could move on after 2.5 hours, but this is understandable given we were on the "express" course. I would recommend here if you are after a good lunch and want to spend a little extra time - and want a little bit of France in Melbourne.

Went here for a work function and was pleasantly surprised by quality, taste and artistry of the food presented. Canapés were the perfect size for nibbling, and the mains (I had the potato and truffle terrine and sampled the buttery, melt-in-the-mouth steak) were excellently prepared. Believe it or not, the only complaint I have were the chips, which were bland. But the crème brûlée MORE than made up for that. :)
