“Superb hotel in the centre of the city!”
Reviewed 2 April 2012

A superb hotel in the heart of the city. Our room had a wonderful view over the city. We stayed on the regency level so enjoyed the hotels regency club. The food and service were both excellent. We'll without doubt be back!

Room Tip: Pay extra for a regency level room, it's definitely worth the money. Both breakfast and evening...

The Grand Hyatt - Melbourne is, from all appearances, about as typical "Hyatt" as you can get.

Although I am a Platinum member of Hyatt Gold Passport, I checked in at the reception desk in the main lobby, and check-in was handled efficiently by a very pleasant clerk. Room was on the 29th floor, with a beautiful view of the City of Melbourne. Room was average sized, and furnished with a large bed, sectional sofa, wall mounted flat screen TV, large bureay, and with a spotless bathroom with basic amenities.

A quick visit to the club lounge on the 31st floor allowed me to observe a quiet, relaxing environment, with a computer work station, but the refreshments available were very sparse - a couple of jars of cookies, coffee, and drinks.

Valet and self-serve parking are both available. Checking in on a Saturday, self-parking was a flat rate of A$15, but this did NOT provide in-and-out privileges. Valet parking was available for A$45 with unlimited in-and-out, but to me, that was an excessive amount to pay for the convenience of parking a car. Fortunately, I was able to leave the car self-parked and use public transportation to get around town, but the fact that the parking did not provide in-and-out privileges was a bit of a surprise - and somewhat disappointing. Not a big deal, since I could work around it, but surprising nonetheless.

Location is excellent - 1 1/2 blocks away from Federation Square and the Flinders Street rail station, convenient access to a variety of tram lines, and within walking distance of just about everything in the Melbourne CBD.

Overall, this is a nice hotel - very typically Hyatt in almost every respect.

Location - Great location at corner of Russell and Collins St, most destinations a short walk away.

Lobby - Lobby feels modern with ample seating for discussing business, waiting for check-in / out etc. I didn't get to check out the restaurants but decor / ambience hit the right points.

Room - Room was on the small side. There was no desk, instead a round table facing the window and a corner sofa couch. The corner couch was a nice touch, but the round table was impractical for the business traveler. It was not easy connecting to a AC outlet (also refer to Internet comments below). I looked straight into an office tower, so had to close all the drapes when changing. Wardrobe was adequate with hangers. Some guests mentioned a Nespresso machine but I didn't see one anywhere in my room.

Bathroom - Bathroom had a strange smell (perhaps from the use of cleaning agents). It also felt old. The shower had a strange smell, which I had an issue with, and the heater was difficult to work with (water either very hot or very cold). Shower floor felt slimy. Definitely not what one would expect at a 5-star hotel, or even a decent 4-star. In terms of the toiletries, they used some run-of-the-mill brand for shower gel and shampoo that had an unpleasant fragrance - ended up using my own travel shampoo. Ditto for the toothpaste. The bathroom phone had mold-like dust growing out of it and could not bring myself to use it. Toilet seat obviously showed significant wear.

Bed - On the plus side, a very comfortable bed and pillows.

Internet - Internet was a problem for me, although it seemed fine for other reviewers. I couldn't connect using the broadband cable provided, so had to use WiFi. The WiFi was unbelievably slow - download speed of 39.0KB/Sec (?!) I haven't seen such speeds since 10 years ago. Not helped by the fact I actually had to pay over $26 for a day of internet use.

Service - Good, prompt service. Concierge very helpful when I needed to find a pharmacy.

Overall - Decent experience, but the bathroom was a major letdown and Hyatt should look into providing 3-star bathrooms for a 5-star hotel (unless I was particularly unlucky). Service and location were great. All in all, a OK choice but probably not the best value for money in town.

Room Tip: Ask for a view not on the side facing directly into the office tower, so you get more privacy.

Dear Globetrotting_HKer
Thank you for your extremely thorough critique on all things Grand Hyatt Melbourne.
We appreciate your upfront opinion about the guest rooms, and understand that our new no-desk design doesn’t cater to everyone’s taste.
Your comments about the bathroom are extremely disappointing and have been forwarded onto our Housekeeping division. The water service issue has also been flagged as this is not acceptable at a 5-star hotel.
In addition, your frustration regarding the daily internet fee has also been duly noted, as we look into a better solution for our guests in line with market expectations.
We do hope you will consider staying at our hotel again, and afford us the opportunity to turn your experience around.

Excellent package provided by Marriner as part of John Cleese appearing in Melbourne.
Room was comfortable, bathroom was luxurious, but what was fantastic was the inclusive Breakfast.
This would have to rate as the best hotel breakfast we have enjoyed - the range of fresh produce was exceptional.
Hotel Reception and conceierge staff were excellent.

Grand Hyatt is not disappointing: good gym, pool, efficient concierge. It's right at Collins Street, so it is easy to walk towards shopping areas, cinemas, Flinders Station and Federation Square. Most other hotels of the same rating are nearby though and in terms of cost, they are at par with each other - expensive.

As with other hotels, internet access is not free and quite expensive: A$.55 per minute or 23.95 for 24 hours. While expensive, internet is very fast. Breakfast is A$40 but it is better to go around the hotel in the morning to have a taste of Melbourne brekky.

As to the rooms, they are well appointed. The bathroom has a shaving kit, vanity kit (with nail file, cotton pads, cotton buds, toiletries, hair dyer. Bath robes and towels are fresh and clean. Wardrobe has iron, and ironing board. Hangers are adequate.

Bed is perfect, so are the pillows. Again, clean, crisp and very comfortable.

Impressive that they have a Nespresso machine in the room with adequate choices. The room has a water heater and there is also a good selection of teas. TV has good channels, local and the usual international information channels. It seems to be a trend - no movie channels so you need to do pay per view if you want movies.

The room has a safe and is in a good, discreet location. Ask for a room which has a view of Collins Street rather than the offices of 101 Collins Street, which I find creepy especially at night.

Airport transfer was a BMW sedan worth A$100 one way which is very expensive. If you are not too picky, a taxi to Spencer St. Station where you can ride the Skybus to the airport worth less than A$20 is a good option as the Skybus is very reliable.

Dear tan_del_MNL
Thanks for your comprehensive review and perhaps you should write our ads! Grand Hyatt Melbourne definitely prides itself on being in the heart of the city close to the bustle and hype. The guest rooms have recently been refurbished and our beds have developed a reputation for being the best.
We appreciate your disappointment regarding the daily internet fee, and are looking into a better solution for our guests.
All the best and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Stayed here for 3 nights over the recent F1 Grand Prix weekend. Arrived at 11am and was promptly checked in, which is a nice surprise. Room is abit on the small side but adequate for me and the king size bed is very comfortable. Free mineral water in room and complimentary newspaper in the morning is an added bonus. Bathroom has separate bathtub and shower cubicle, and complimentary toiletries which is expected from a 5 star hotel.
Leisure facilities is good as there is a big gym (but can be crowded) and a small swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna. I like sport facilities in hotel so this is a big thumb up from me.
Didnt have a chance to dine in here as i missed breakfast every morning ( slept in) but did frequent the bar every nights for drinks. Staff is friendly too.
Location wise is good as near to shops and restaurants.
For the record, my best experience with Hyatt is at Hyatt on The Bund Shanghai. But for Melbourne, this is good enough. A pleasant weekend stay. Will be back.

Dear whereisfatboy
Thank you for your complimentary comments of our hotel. In particular we’re glad that you thoroughly enjoyed our first-class gym facilities at the City Club Health and Fitness Centre - it’s the largest hotel gym in Australia. As a sports fiend, next time be sure to play tennis on the outdoor court located on Level 9 in amongst the city skyline. We hope you enjoyed the Grand Prix and look forward to hosting you again in the future.

I stayed here 2 years ago for a conference and then again this year. The rooms have been upgraded in that time I think. Very modern and elegant. Rooms have flat screens and ipod docs as you would expect. Nice lobby to catch up with people. Enjoyed my 2nd stay here much more than the first.
