“Cheap suit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2012

This place is not falling apart, but standards are slipping. Our room had a broken toilet seat, a faulty lamp and an ironing board that no longer functioned. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to find one fault is a misfortune, to find two looks like carelessness, to find three (in an allegedly upmarket hotel) looks like rank bad management of housekeeping.

For us it was really well placed for events (we were attending a concert), shopping and the city restraunts. Although slightly further afield we had no issues also walking to the markets, and up and down Lygon St for great food. With all this at our fnger tips we didn't really use the restraunt within the hotel but did utilise the bar at Harrys.

Staff were friendly and efficient and they saw fit to upgrade us for our three night stay which is always welcome. Room was nicely set out but somewhat starved of natural light and so a bit dark. The bed & pillows were super comfortable, which can be a game breaker if otherwise.

We would stay again.

Room Tip: There are 2 towers, we stayed in the west away from the river. No huge issue but we were crowded by...

When we arrived in Melbourne we had considered using the hotels’ own transfer service from the airport but this was priced at $85 to collect us and $95 to take us back. We had been told that a taxi fare would be about $55 and the journey would take approximately 30 minutes. There was also a Hotel Shuttle service and their service desk was conveniently located inside the airport terminal this cost only $19 per person each way and took us right to the hotel entrance. The concierge contacted the shuttle service on our behalf to arrange for the return pick up and transfer to the airport.
The hotel is superbly located on Little Collins St which is only a short walk down the hill to Bourke St, Swanston St and the city centre shopping malls. It is also close to the theatre (Bourke St)and at least one cinema (Russel St). There are several restaurants bars and eating housings within a stones throw from the hotel entrance. There is a convenience store opposite the hotel and a short walk up the hill takes you to a more substantial 7-11 store where you can purchase your wine and beer in addition to breakfast goods and snacks. Heading down the hill from the entrance to Russell St you will find a coffee/ breakfast restaurant on the corner (the Old Post Office). A ten minute walk will take you to Flinders St and into the heart of the city’s laneways. Or if you prefer, to Federation Square and across the Yarra onto the southbank to enjoy the numerous restaurants , Royal Botanical Gardens or the view from the Eureka Tower.
Check-in at the hotel went smoothly. We had booked a single bedroom Queen apartment at the Hotel and had requested a “an upper level room with a view” . The hotel basically consists of 2 towers with the facilities shared between each tower. Our room was in the opposite tower to the reception but had the restaurant and “Harry’s Bar” on the lower levels. The room was a bit of a disappointment for us. It was dark and cold. Although it is fair to say that we had just arrived from Perth where they were experiencing the longest heatwave since 1965 and the Melbourne temperatures had plummeted by 26 degrees to a mere 14 degrees !! On entering our room there appeared to be a corner taken out of it and the living space between this boxed in area of the room and the kitchen was taken up by a third bed. This reduced the room space considerably. The view from the bedroom window was of the hotels’ other tower which explained why it was so dark. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom area was adequate but “compact”. It did not have a spacious feel at all, the lighting was dim and my wife had difficulty in seeing properly to apply make-up etc. Our first impressions were not wonderful. We headed down to Harry’s bar and took advantage of a two for one cocktail offer before heading out to a restaurant on Bourke St for dinner. The bar staff at Harrys were really friendly. The following morning we were still not happy with the room and so I approached the reception staff with our concerns. Initially I was told that the hotel was fully booked and there were no other rooms available. I was not happy and talked about changing hotels before I was told that there was an upgraded room in the other tower available for an additional $20 per night. After a look at the room we decided to take the upgraded room. It was basically the same size but without the “boxed in corner” or third bed to take up space. The bed was bigger and there was a bay window. The view was unobstructed and let in a lot more light. We were much happier.
There didn’t appear to be any useful information in the room about things to see around the city. There were a couple of glossy magazines but they didn’t have “sights and places” or a city map. The concierge was helpful and provided me with a map and pointed me in the right direction for getting out and about. He explained about the FREE city circle tram and where to catch it. He also told me where to purchase a daily ticket for the other city trams.
On checkout the concierge happily stored our suitcases whilst we took a last look at the city having lunch before the shuttle bus arrived to take us to the airport.
Melbourne is a wonderfully vibrant and exciting city with lots to do and interesting places to visit. This Hotel is ideally situated to experience all that the city has to offer.

we stayed at the stamford plaza a few years ago and it was excellent then. We have just stayed this weekend to go to a concert. Service was excellent and the room was very clean. The beds are very comfortable and there is plenty of room in your room to spread out. The wine bar downstairs was lovely and staff very friendly. Its not that far from the city centre and there is plenty of shoping on collins street. When in melbourne we differently recommend you stay at the stamford.

Stayed after Christmas 2011 & during New Year 2012 with teenage daughter & her school friend.

We booked a Twin Bed + roll-away bed room for 3 @ this Hotel through Wotif.com during the New Year period of 2011 for a total of 6 nights. The price was exceptionally good and that is another reason I chose this Hotel.

Surprisingly we were able to book in just prior to New Year however were not able to have New Years Eve at the Hotel as it was booked out, however, the WOTIF online booking service mistakenly booked us IN for New Year's Eve as well, even although we had not paid for this. We advised Management accordingly and checked out into a Youth Hostel for New Year's Eve, the only thing available that night, then checked back into The Stamford Plaza the next day for a further 3 nights = Total of 6 nights.

Luckily for us there was a room available for the first part of the stay prior to New Year. We had booked 3 -4 weeks in advance only. This room was large enough for 2 however we had an extra person (small teenager) for- roll away bed, and that sat in the lounge room making eating at the table provided a bit squishy, so we were offered a much larger room however King Bed & Rollaway. We declined as it was a trouble to move everything & the smaller room proved to be fine for 3 days as it was a great deal larger than the majority of Hotel rooms in major cities in any case.

When we checked back in for the 2nd stay we took up the offer for the larger room. It was great. I had been recovering from a major operation and had been violently ill on the trip from Melbourne to Sydney on the flight and in the car both to airport in Sydney & from airport in Melbourne.

The assistant or Manager named PRUE was exceptionally helpful and tried to accommodate us in every way possible. We were very impressed with her as a Manager & customer service agent. The Hotel staff were also top quality re service: from the chappie who made up the roll away beds to the staff who brought dinner to the room, to the reception staff and especially the staff who held our bags and loaded them in and out of Taxis=> VERY impressed!

This Hotel is located in one of the most convenient & best areas of Melbourne city, really close to Parliament Station and within a lovely shopping district. We did not expect views from the Hotel rooms as we are in the centre of town which was more important to us; don't know if they have rooms with views however if they do you should book with Hotel & request this. Not important to us.

We ate at Harry's Bar on a number of occasions- especially one night with elderly relatives who LOVED ! it. Service great and food yummy plus reasonable prices for a Bar in centre of town.

We also ate thru room service also very good.

The 2nd room we stayed in was HUGE! Loved it! Kitchen & 2 TV's , lovely bedding, clean, very quiet and snazzy glass lifts show off the lovely circular designed lobby & Hotel design.

When staying away from 'Home', atmosphere & safety is very important. This Hotel has that, plus excellent professional staff, nice food, the BEST location near railway too & best shops, PLUS VALUE! Re: The internet = we paid for this, and would have preferred free wifi as it was a problem to purchase a Modem just for this purpose.

Overall though- really recommend this Hotel. Like all Stamfords -(we have stayed many times @ North Ryde Macquarie Park Sydney as I work @ the University, the rooms are much larger than average, hence can accommodate extra people. When other Hotels finally realise that families OFTEN travel with at least ONE extra family member, and that a sofa bed or roll-away in the room is no big deal, and $50 extra is reasonable, finally, then, we may have an increase in the booking rates mid season in major cities, all I can say to those other Hotels is WAKE UP!!

To the Stamford though I say=> JOLLY GOOD JOB!

I’ve alerted your kind comments to Prue and the front office staff. They really do a wonderful job don’t they?! We always aim to provide our guests with the sort of service that will make them feel special and well cared for when away from home…especially when they are unwell, poor you! Although, it’s obvious that you still managed to thoroughly enjoy your stay in Melbourne. We stayed a week over Christmas at this hotel. The first room we stayed in the first couple nights faced the other hotel tower making it very dark and late at night the smokers at the hotel bar would congregate between to two towers waking us up as the noise level rose. Finally Christmas night I called and asked to be moved the next day. The front desk clerk was very accomodating to the point that he would have moved us that minute. We opted to be moved the next day but not unless we could be there because we had food in the refrigerator and we also had to repack. The next day while we were out the hotel moved us to the opposite side of the tower in a room with a magnificient view. They moved the food by not the $25 poinsettia that I had decorated to make the room feel a little like an American Christmas. When I inquired about the poinsettia a search was made and a housekeeper brought it with all the branches taped up. She said it had been placed in a storage room. It was a very sad sight.
The location was perfect both for touring the city and for going to St. Francis Church for Christmas Eve midnight Mass. Melbourne is awesome at Christmas! Parking was so expensive we gave up the rental car.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room with a view of St. Patrick's Cathedral. You will have a quiet room with natu...

Christmas is a festive time so there were probably are larger than normal volume of people in the outdoor café we have linking our suite towers. I’m really happy that you felt you could ask to be moved and that you got such a positive reaction from the front desk staff in accommodating your request. Pity about your poor poinsettia tough!! I too would have been upset about its mistreatment. Please accept my sincerest apology. I’m glad you still had a merry Christmas and enjoyed a beautiful Mass at St Francis. See you next time!
