“Good value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

We spent 3 nights in a studio apartment. The apartment was spotlessly clean & very well equipped. The only negative is there is no seating space other than on the bed & it was a tight squeeze with two adults & two large suitcases to negotiate your way round the bed. reception staff were very helpful & overall I would recommend the studio accommodation for a short stay. Any longer than 2/3 nights consider a one bedroom apartment to give you more space.

Room Tip: Request a high floor, stunning views & less road noise.

I stay at the Oaks frequently and find the apartments roomy and clean. The staff are helpful and there is parking available conveniently in the hotel. The Oaks is close to the train station and a short walk from the centre of Melbourne shopping.

The restaurants in Spring St are great and you will be spoiled for choice in dining.

Room Tip: My only advice would be to ask for a room at the back of the hotel or several floors up as Lonsdale...

The reception staff at the Oaks on Lonsdale will tell you that the hotel is a non smoking establishment, but this does not stop guests from smoking in the rooms.
We had booked an overnight stay in a 2 bedroom apartment and arrived around 7pm, as soon as we opened the door to our apartment we noticed the strong smell of cigarette smoke. So we returned to the reception desk to request another room, unfortunately due to the lateness of our request there were no other 2 bedroom suites vacant, the only solution offered by the desk clerk was to come up and spray the room with deodoriser!

The next morning when checking out the receptionist enquired as to how we enjoyed our stay, I informed him of the smokey room situation, and he waived the fee for car parking which was gratefully received.

Overall as other reviewers have stated the accommodation provided is more than adequate for 4 adults for a short stay in Melbourne. Location wise it is an easy walk to restaurant areas from the hotel for meals. We had a hire car and had no trouble leaving the city quickly the next morning via the express way, however traffic in the cbd the previous evening in peak hour was terrible, so factor in time for this delay if arriving after 5pm.

The Oaks provides value for money when seeking 2 bedroom accommodation in Melbourne.

I stayed at Oaks on Lonsdale in a 2 bedroom apartment.

The apartment was huge, with a really well appointed kitchen and dining/living area which extended out onto the balcony. The bathroom was spacious with clean towels and a shower over the bath. The bedrooms were clean, comfortable and quiet. The apartment was tastefully decorated with quality furnishings.

The location was perfect for us, just a few minutes walk from Parliament station and a couple of blocks from Chinatown.

This is one of my favourite places to stay in Melbourne however their prices have gone up a lot since I last stayed, its worth joining the "My Oaks" to try and snap up a bargain.

We stayed in the Oaks on Lonsdale for one week. We reserved a 1 bedroom apartement which is very spacious. The apartement is new, has a nice kitchen and a spacious living area. We were located in the 6th floor, which is a little dark (try to get a room in the higher floors). They do not have a gym or a pool - but there is a park nearby to take a walk.
We enjoyed our stay as the hotel is located in the center and everything is in walking distance

Room Tip: choose a high floor!

Stayed here for 2 nights after completing the Great Ocean Road. Oaks on Market St would have been more central location. We had a 2bedroom with our son and his wife, however wasnt aware of 2bathroom option until afterwards. It would certainly have speeded us up in getting ready. Room appeared clean, however the soles of my white socks were filthy after walking in them, so I guess it wasnt as clean as it looked. The washing machine stopped working with a load in progress and the staff had to take my washing away to wash and dry it elsewhere, though I was able to uplift it at reception after dinner. The beds were very comfortable but the bottom sheet didnt reach the foot of the bed and the 10-12 inches at the bottom was bare mattress. NOT very hygienic. I alerted reception and the bed was remade but still neither the mattress protector nor the sheet reached the bottom!! Otherwise it was fine. One bedroom didnt have a window. The little shop next door is convenient, but very expensive- and our bread rolls were not fresh.

People have sometimes commented to me how fortunate I am to travel for work, that it must be exciting to be jet-setting here and there, your expenses paid and your bed always made for you. Well, it is - for the first year or so. After that, however, the measure of comfort and satisfaction with work travel seems to be (for me, anyway) linked to what extent you can create a sense of "home" while your away from home.

Take the Oaks on Lonsdale, for example. This has been a regular haunt for me in my years of commuting between Sydney and Melbourne.

Positioned toward the top of Lonsdale St (between Spring and Exhibition Streets) its a fairly central and convenient location which, as I hope to prove herein, is about as "home away from home" as it gets.

The property entrance is unremarkable but functional - just like home
The 1 bedroom apartment is intelligently furnished and smells a little stale on first entering - just like home. An opened window addresses this quickly - just like home.

There's a full kitchen with just enough utensils to get by but not quite enough to complete that recipe in the jamie Oliver cookbook - just like home.

The television and reception (both in-house and pay) is adequate - just like home.

I walk in at the end of the day, open the dishwasher and wonder if the dishes were washed with detergent or just sent thru a cycle on hot water - just like home.

I walk in at the end of the day and notice the bed has been made but the pillows and cushions never completely make it back where they began, with one or several remaining on the floor undisturbed from where they were kicked off the previous nightt - again, just like home.

I always seem to wonder where all the face washing towels go - just like home

I always seem to run out of supplied tea bags, sugar and milk - just like home

I often wait a tad longer for the lift (when on the higher floors) than I'd prefer - just like home.

Having said all this, I point these things out not as criticisms but as reminders of home and normality which are very welcome for a traveller yearning for home and normality.

So should you stay here is you're NOT in Melbourne for business? My answer to that is yes.

Firstly, check out the Oaks rates. Generally speaking, you won't find better value in Melbourne for what you get.

Secondly, the staff are efficient and helpful and, well, normal (which is nice)

Thirdly, the apartments are well maintained, apart from an odd blown light or not enough hangars, but these things are usually fixed quickly. (though I tolerate these niggly things becase, you guessed it, it reminds me of home).

If there is a downside to Oaks on Lonsdale, its the absence of in-house dining arrangements. I usually cook for myself (there's the home routine again) but if you're wanting to have a break from normality, you will find the menu card located in the kitchen or the loungeroom desk contains an international range of fare (from Indian thru Chinese, Italian and so on) but it is all ferried in from surrounding restaurants and has more of a home delivery feel than an in-house dining feel. Another property, Oaks on Collins, trumps the Lonsdale property on this poing (they have a reasonably good in-house restaurant offering a more traditional "room service" experience) but it is usually okay food. Try the Idian Butter Chicken with the Roti - I once ordered three nights in a row in an uncharacteristic week of non-cooking.

Sure I dont swing the door open at the end of the day to be greeted with a martini when I yell out "Honey, I'm Home" but, to be fair, this doesn't happen at home either.

Oaks on Lonsdale - its a good bet for a few days/week in Melbourne. Check out the website.

Room Tip: higher floors on Lonsdale Street side to limit street noise, back rooms less street noise but views...
