“Nothing Special”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

I stayed here for 1 night while attending a two day conference. Check in times are just that do not expect them to find you an alternate room to check into slightly early....maybe they were quite full. Service was courteous and okay but not great. Room was basic, clean and tidy and of a good size but nothing special that would make you want to come back here, more likely to try another option. Road noise was quite high in my room. Corporate rate seemed like good value for Auckland. So if it was good value compared with other options I would stay again but I wouldn't go out of my way.

When on business in Auckland have often stayed at this location since it first opening back in the late 1980s or early 1990s when it was part of the Pan Pacific chain.Have continued to visit outside business as the location is ideal for central city accomodation and we have always been satisfied with room standard and front desk service. Unfortunately during a recent stay an early morning call requested by our son who was also staying, was not carried out and as a consequence if we had not followed up with our own call he and his wife and small child may well have missed their return flight to Tokyo. A stressful situation created that was not necessary when staying at such an establishment.

The issue was taken up with on duty desk staff who were apologetic but stress levels high with time limit pressure to get to International airport.Tardiness for this basic service is not expected from an establishment of this standing.

This is a nice hotel with a good room however we were told the pool was open until 11pm when it wasn't, we were also told breakfast was until 11am but it wasn't and were also told we could get a late check out as this was part of the deal we had purchased but when we got there they said we couldn't - after arguing we got to have a late checkout but the lady at the front desk didn't activate our room key so we got locked out of our room in the morning anyway. They also said on the phone parking was free but then charged us for it. We just felt like staff lied to get you to stay there and then were rude to us about it - not good when you are paying this price.

The Rendezvous is often priced below the other 4/5 star hotels in Auckland and I am not really sure why.

The location is excellant, hotel is really good and the indoor pool is certainly worth visiting if you have time.

We have stayed here a couple of times and the staff are really friendly.

Stayed for 1 night in Feb 2012, after booking a Wotif mystery hotel, so the price was right.

Rooms were clean and quite spacious, with comfortable beds.

Overall good experience, but if paying full price I would prefer Sky city or crowne plaza, as location is slightly better (depends on what part of the city you want to be in).

We selected this property for our 3 week New Zealand vacation based upon Trip Advisor reviews and price—trying to find the “sweet spot”. We held all our reviews until the end of the trip in hopes of reasonable comparisons across the country, factoring in the standards we found typical in New Zealand (for example, free, unlimited internet is not the norm as it generally is in the US).

Pro's:
-It was a great value at the price we paid ($140NZD, peak season) for downtown Auckland.
-3 hours of complimentary internet per day.
-Modest parking charge for downtown--$15NZD per night). Parking lot is adjacent to the hotel and connected by interior corridor.
-Nicely appointed room. Tub, shower, and granite in the bathroom. Bedroom is modern and clean.
-Allowed early check in since a room was available.
-Reasonable walk (15 minutes) to the waterfront and tourist areas. The walk felt safe, even after hours.
-Next door to the Auckland Police Headquarters--have to figure that's a positive. We only heard one siren all night.

Con's:
-Staff friendliness typical of a large US hotel. It was OK, yet short of the very, very warm reception found at every other property we visited in New Zealand.
-Check in was slow--about 20 minutes with just 2 people ahead of us in line. We understand staffing limits, yet observed a front desk-attired staff repeatedly "peaking" from the door behind reception, yet not lending a hand.
-The grout in the bathroom (floor and shower) wasn't as clean as it should be.

We'd stay there again if we were in Auckland.

We took the airport shuttle bus from the airport (good idea I might add) to the end of the street where our hotel was. On first seeing the Rendezvous Hotel from the side angle I was a bit nervous of what it was going to be like inside. it looked very old fashioned. The Rendezvous signage was very 50s. At the front of the hotel leading into the Foyer was good but could have been better. The Foyer was not that welcoming, a little bare and no feminine touches. No flowers etc. It was a bit of a let down, although in its favour I have been in Hotel Foyers before which have been beautiful and the rooms abysmal so you really cannot compare. Also there was building work going on we were told, although nothing was happening whilst we were there. We had just left a lovely hotel in Singapore where the staff were constantly cleaning the Foyer tables, the first thing I notice here was the glass table could have done with a clean. There was definite evidence of coffee cup rings and dust. I need not have worried though the room was lovely and clean and we had a pretty good view of the Tower. We had booked a Deluxe room and at first I was not sure we had the right room, it did not seem that "deluxe"; but we were only staying for three nights so were quite comfortable. I understand that not everyone's idea of deluxe is the same as ours. I would have rated this hotel 3+*.
On the whole a nice hotel and good walk down Queen Street to the Habour. I probably would stay here again in the future but hopefully they will have had a facelift.
