Very tired hotel that needed an update ten years ago. At the top of a long steep hill so although on a map it looks close to the harbour and Queen Street it is not particularly accessible or central. There were no safes in the room or safety deposits at reception so valuables had to be given to reception in a plastic bag. Breakfast was a complete scrum with very poor service and the whole place needed a good scrub.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel
Stayed: March 2018, travelled as a couple

We had booked to travel on the Northern Explorer from Auckland to Wellington so were keen to find a hotel within an easy walk of the Strand railway station. The Copthorne was perfect, being only a 10 minute walk away. The hotel was comfortable and clean and its in-house restaurant provided a good meal at a reasonable price.

We were booked into this hotel by our travel agents - Trail-finders and to be fair it was OK. The place itself is a little run down and in need of a re-furb but hey ho it was just a place to stay to have a couple of days In Auckland prior to joining our cruise.
We had a room at the back of the hotel and as the hotel is on a hill we could actually see the sea which was a slight bonus! Room was tired but adequate but the A/C was too noisy to run at night so we ended up opening the patio doors for a while until the traffic noise became too intrusive.
Breakfast wasn't included so we paid extra to eat in the hotel as we couldn't find anywhere near enough on foot to eat. The buffet style breakfast was good and so was the evening meal we had one night but the evening service was a bit slow.
Most of the other guests we spoke to were also on the same cruise as us so this seems a popular hotel for a stay as its only about a mile to the dock's.
They don't offer a shuttle bus but you can easily get a taxi which costs about £8. Overall an OK hotel for a transit stop/lay over but not good enough if you were spending say a week in Auckland.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel

Overall, this hotel has a slightly shoddy feel about it. The bathroom was really old and not very clean, the lift was smelly, the bed far too soft, etc. etc. The location is great; walking distance to the university and CBD. Recommended if you don't want to spend too much and still be in a central location.

It's an old hotel but in the city centre, close to Auckland hospital and University of Auckland. Queen Street is within walking distance. NZ$20 for parking and with only limited space, first come first serve.
Warm and friendly atmosphere.
