“Excellent, friendly, well-run!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

I loved this place! It's a former Tongan residence for the Queen of Tonga, and the use of space is both quirky and welcoming. It's a great location off Parnell, and run by a very friendly couple.

NOTE: This is NOT City Lodge, 400 Parnell St. That place has been mistaken for this one in guidebooks. Avoid City Lodge, go to City GARDEN Lodge.

Pluses:
Free wi-fi
Lots of free parking! In Auckland!
Super friendly, helpful owners
Very quiet and laid-back
Nice courtyard for sunning, reading, eating, etc
Cute common room, NOT dominated by a TV
Enormous, well-stocked kitchen (my chef-husband was in love)
Very very clean and comfy.

Minuses:
No free breakfast.
No minuses. Stay here.

This is a wonderful little place to stay if you want to be out of the city centre, but close enough to the water. It is quiet and a little oasis within Auckland. Parnell is a cute little high end dining / cafe location and within walking distance to the harbour, rose gardens, restaurants and museum. Visit the French Market at the bottom of the hill Sat or Sun morning or the Parnell market on Sat. morning near the museum. Ian (owner) is a great help. The kitchen was CLEAN and lots of little things to marinate your food, add spices, free of charge. Bring a towel; linen is supplied. Internet available for 2 NZD / hr. Parking on the street or a few cars in the driveway. 18 NZD to take shuttle back to airport. The cheapest place we stayed in New Zealand. We would stay here again in a second! This isn't just for students...good place for professionals wishing to spend their $ on activities rather than expensive accommodation. Book ahead to ensure you have a room. 20 NZD key deposit.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms upstairs away from the washrooms if staying on weekend so you are not awakened by...

We were on our honeymoon, and it was a good value to stay in their double room, The hostel is clean and waterh is hot and strong. We didn't cook but the common area is cosy with fireplace and kitchen is clean. It is away from downtown so quiet and easily take the link if you are heading from airport, you can take the local bus to train station then take the train to new market which is not far from the hostel. walk maybe 20 min. or take the link to the hostel. it is the cheaper option if you have time, and you can buy the all day pass, covered train, bus and inner island ferry. check at isite at the airport.
p.s. if you do want to book the shuttle direct from hostel to airport, call the shuttle yourself to save $2 that hostel charge for the booking fee!

I had an awesome time at this hostel. The people were great. It's a 20 min walk from the city centre in a residential neighborhood. Warm lounge, cosy atmosphere

Fellow traveller recommended us City Garden Lodge, and we were not disappointed. Good value. Nice location close to Parnell Road, where you can find several good restaurants and cafes, and an uforgettable Chocolaterie.

Some say the common areas are run-down. In our opinion the kitchen was well-equipped and clean and we found the whole place charming. We started our 2 week NZ trip in Auckland, and got helpful advice from the owner.

The rooms might not be very fancy but the whole feel to this place is just great! The manager is friendly and helpful, location is great, nice outside area's and kitchen has everything you need (including spices, sauces and all those things that are hard to carry around when backpacking). It's not too expensive, so very much worth the money!
The first double room we stayed in had an old matras which wasn't that comfy, but when we got back the second time the double room was better.
