This hotel ticks all the boxes. It has a great location being in the heart of Napier and one block from the bay. It is very clean and comfortable. We stayed there for 2 days on vacation, and regret not spending more time. We stayed in the Kiwi room, which was well equipped and appointed. We ordered room service one night and the food arrived fast, hot and was very good. There is a library on the first floor that is very relaxing and well stocked. There was even some port to cap off the night. What really makes this hotel great was the people. Everybody was amazingly. The check in process was easy and warm. The staff in the bar were great and I am very happy to write this review. If we ever come back to Napier, there is only one place to stay.

Room tip: Kiwi room was on a corner.

Arrived bedraggled and wet (touring on a motorbike). The staff could not do enough for us - took wet bike clothes off to a drying room, looked after our helmets and took us to our lovely cosy room. After refreshing ourselves, went to Churchill bar in hotel and very knowledgeable friendly staff served us lovely wines (and great background music).
Hotel is very central and very short walk to beach prom. Parking not so great - on street is metered and hotel charge NZ$5 per night for their car park (across road). Wifi was not great on 2nd floor.

Dear Chris C
It was a pleasure to welcome you in to our warm and dry hotel after your somewhat rainy ride here! Fantastic that you decided to join us in our Churchill's Bar, with 25 wines by the glass and stunning Hawkes Bay beers why go anywhere else?! Thank you for your comments and we hope to see you on your next bike trip to beautiful Napier.

My wife and I decided on our first trip to Napier to book somewhere authentic and that is exactly what the County Hotel turned out to be. From the extra attentive staff to the well appointed room and delicious food we were very impressed and would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for something truly unique. Top marks from us.

Dear AdamSTC
If your looking for a truly authentic Napier trip you can't get better then staying with us here at the County hotel. Being one of a few buildings to survive the 1931 earthquake the hotel is full of lovely original features (as well as all of today's mod cons!). Thank you very much for sharing your review here on Trip Advisor and we hope to welcome you back again in the future.

We very much enjoyed our one night in Napier, and appreciated the beauty and charm of this old hotel--and its fantastic location and topnotch service. But we have to lower its rating somewhat because of two small issues: 1) the fact that the room (the Aki Aki room, we think), although lovely, was crowded, with very few places to put our things; and 2) the windows above the bed let significant light in from the hall. We hope the hotel can address these issues, because it's a great property with a wonderful staff. (We loved the library and the free port! It was a great place to converse with other guests. And we loved the honey directly from the honeycomb at breakfast.)

Dear 2ndtimecharm
Thank you for your comments, we appreciate you taking the time to post your thoughts here on Trip Advisor. We have indeed addressed the issue of the beautiful stained glass window allowing a little light in by adjusting the curtain rail and we are grateful for your comments. We only wish you had told us upon check out so we could have done it sooner!
We are a little bemused to the comment regarding the room being a little overcrowded, as the room does have a wardrobe, luggage rack and plenty of floor space as well as the spa bath, double basin and separate shower, therefore allowing plenty of room for storage and luxury!
However, I am thrilled you enjoyed the rest of the hotel and our extra added touches and we hope to welcome you back again.

We've recently returned from a month's touring in New Zealand, staying in lots of lovely hotels, but this was by far the best. Furnished and fitted in Art Deco elegance, the hotel manages to combine a wonderful feel of history, with up to date comforts. The owners have also inserted some lovely quirky features - check out the painting in the lobby! - which give it a delightful feeling of home. The staff are welcoming and very helpful, the food in the restaurant excellent, with a great wine choice. And it's positioned in the centre of Napier for easy walking to all the city's beautiful buildings, as well as being a good centre for touring the area (Hawke's Bay vineyards especially worth a visit.) If you're thinking of visiting Napier, do think about the County Hotel.
