Brookfields hadn't been on my radar but someone from another vineyard said I had to go there, and I'm so glad I did! It's charming and a bit secluded, intimate, old-school, with a very laid back, welcoming vibe. I sat down for a tasting w/ John (one of the owners), a funny man with entertaining and informative stories for all different subjects that eventually lead back to wine. Listening to him talk would've been enough, but they also do some cracking good wines! I don't think I've ever laughed more during a tasting. Absolutely check out this beautiful little vineyard.

Loved the fact that we were the only ones at this really pretty vineyard. The proprietor, a man of maturer years, had a lot of bottles open (the whites weren't chilled but actually at some tasting rooms they are over-chilled so they are much harder to taste) and the tasting just kind of evolved depending on what we liked and didn't like. He loved hearing about our family etc and he was keen to tell us about his. There was no charge for the tasting which did mean we felt we should buy a bottle or two, since he'd been really generous with his time and wines (one of the bottles sold in a London restaurant for £120 or maybe it was NZ$).

This was the last and best of four wineries we visited on a Hawke's Bay wine tour. It was very non-traditional. Clearly not be most beautiful Cellar Door that we visited. John sat us around a table in his barrel room and began quizzing us about wines. He was eager to share his overall knowledge about wines, not just have us taste his wines. He also had some great stories. It was an hour of education and entertainment, not to mention that we got to taste a number of good wines too!

Brookfields was the first vineyard we stopped at on our winery tour of Hawk's Bay. We were impressed that the owner's wife was our guide! The grounds were very beautiful, especially since there had been a wedding there the night before and there were still rose petals all around! Our guide took us right up to the vines and explained where they were at in the ripening process--ready to pick off leaves to expose the fruit to the sun. Then we went inside where our group had our own room for the tasting. There was a little explanation about each wine that we tried--pinot gris, chardonnay, sirah, sauv blanc and a dessert wine. There were a few quiz questions with the winners earning a free bottle of wine! We could tell that all the wine was well made, though it was not to our taste. Still, the beauty of the winery and the dedication of the winemaker made the visit very enjoyable.

Sharon was fabulous passionate about the wines and we enjoyed tasting a selection of white, red and desert wines. The group asked lots of questions which Sharon happily answered. A lovely experience for everyone.
