Beautiful room and spa. My fiancé did a little happy dance when she saw it and said that she'd like to live here. On top of that the lovely couple who must own the place went above and beyond to make us feel welcome.

We had a fantastic stay for 3 nights at the silver fern, lovely rooms with super comfy beds, was very quiet at night despite it being a very busy weekend, had the most wonderful nights sleep, well equiped kitchen and the private spa pool a huge bonus for weary bodies.

The owners are very welcoming and bent over backwards to make our stay perfect, a rare thing when staying in motels or hotels, especially when it is busy.

thanks so much for everything, will definately be back to stay again when in Rotorua!!!

Our third stay with these guys. Lovely people. Rooms are beautifully presented, clean and full of all the latest things. The spa pool is awesome! I think there is one in each room. Great stay, when in Rotovegas we will be back.

We stayed at Silver Fern in Rotorua for 3-nights in mid-March during a tour of New Zealand. We had booked a Standard Studio apartment on the internet a number of months in advance of our visit. On arrival we were pleased to be told that we had been upgraded to a Superior Studio on the first floor which had a balcony and hot tub.

The studio (number 11) was very spacious with a huge and comfortable bed. Yet again we found that everything we could possibly need had been thought of from free use of the guest washing machine (provide your own powder) with a tumble dryer at $3 (ample time to dry a complete load) to a kitchenette with fresh coffee for the cafetières. On arrival we were given a carton of fresh milk as well for tea and coffee. The bathroom had plenty of space for toiletries and personal effects which is sometimes lacking in other places we have stayed. The hot tub - filled with geothermally heated water was huge but with endless supplies of hot water, filled quickly - great fun!

There is free WiFi available which is very quick and always available, something of a rarity in a number of motels in New Zealand. The room had a sofa and other seating as well and was fully serviced each day. There are a large number of leaflets and information in the reception and there is always someone on hand to answer questions or help with bookings. The only slight negative to this studio is that the full length patio doors into the apartment open directly onto the walkway to other accommodations so it is a little overlooked, especially if you forget to close the curtains!

Although situated on Fenton Street, the main road into the centre of town, the motel is very quiet at night. It is located only a few minutes drive into town and from ‘Countdown’ - a local big supermarket where you can stock up on supplies. Restaurants seem to close early in Rotorua and most are closed by 9-9.30pm. We ate at Nuvolari an Italian restaurant in Tutanekai Street which was very good value, had friendly staff, a good menu and stays open until late (after 10pm).

Whilst in Rotorua we wanted to see a wide variety of geothermal activity so we chose Waimangu Park (about 25-minutes drive) and Wai O Tapu Park (about 40-minutes drive) which are totally different to each other and allowed us to see acidic lakes, bubbling boiling mud and geysers. We got to both venues first thing in the morning to try and see them with less crowds.

We stayed at the Silver Fern the weekend before Easter. The manager was very helpful and even upgraded our room (we booked a studio and got upgraded to a one room) as some workers were painting the wall outside our booked room.

The room is very comfortable and had some very nice "extras" such as an ipod radio dock, new quality kitchen appliances, nice plunger coffee and a massive spa bath. There is a stack of dvd's for guest use at reception.

Most rooms have large glass windows and entry doors. While this is great for having a sunny room, as the hotel is on a busy road I needed to have our windows shut when sleeping to keep the noise out (I am a light sleeper). Our room was upstairs and I would recommend requesting an upstairs room as cars park quite close to the units downstairs.

Room Tip: ask for a room upstairs

I have stayed several times in Rotorua and it is very touristy so be prepared. The corporate smile you can expect also in the Silver Fern. I found the lady at the reception not friendly, there was no "thank you" when I handed over my credit card while saying "here you are", there was also no thank you afterwards and when I informed the same lady that the faucet in the bathroom of suite 06 was dripping (obviously already for a longer time) all she did was instructing her husband to write it down and have it fixed. The husband reacted promptly by saying that he would replace the faucet, a confirmation that he was aware of the leaking faucet or the condition of the faucets in the motel in general. They should have replaced the faucet earlier, instead thousands of litres of clean drinking water are spilled.
The room was clean, beds and pillow considered good and kitchen was fitted out well, there was even a quality scissor. I missed a light under the cupboard above the kitchen sink. It's a 2 story motel with a wooden?? floor and we had a room on the ground floor. You can heard every step from the guest above you and if they speak loud you can hear that as well. Overall a reasonable place to stay but nothing more then that, Silver Fern is priced on the high-end obviously due to their ranking on Tripadvisor but the host can definitely be friendlier, more sincere, to their guest.

Room Tip: Be careful with your ground-floor booking
