Fabulous suites in the back of the hotel, off the garden; quiet! Terry was a fantastic host! We met everyone in town at the Dean’s retirement party in the bar...great group of people; loved that town!

Oh what a find and quite by chance too. A boutique hotel with so many surprises, beauty and fun. Colourful, flamboyant, elegant and discreet. A gorgeous cocktail of fabulousness. If that isn’t enough to tempt add a well stocked cocktail bar , wine cellar and an excellent restaurant. This is a place to dress up for and lends itself to a quiet dinner for two or a small group. We had a large comfortable room reached through a pretty garden which also accessed parking. The staff were accommodating, pleasant well trained and welcoming. The food superb. It was a glorious evening which we both enjoyed enormously. If you stay go upstairs to a tiny library with only two armchairs and have a port or a sherry.

We had a night recently in the Pohutukawa room, one of the "Best Suites" in the detached house at the back. Had a chinoise theme, with a slightly clashing modern desk/chair. Two comfortable large beds, a separate wardrobe, and a bathroom separated from the rest of the room by a large frosted glass wall.

This glass wall was good in the daytime, as most of the suite's windows are in the bathroom, and meant the light from these helped illuminate the rest of the room. However, the downside was the same: that at night time the streetlights shone through the bathroom wall into the main room, and when the sun came up the next morning the room was pretty well lit. To get a lie-in, I wore an eye mask: first time in probably 20 hotel stays I've needed one. Some street noise, which is not surprising as it's located along Vivian St, one of New Plymouth's main thoroughfares.

The bathroom had a spa bath that was big enough for two. The TV had freeview, Neon and Netflix. There was no security stay on the room door. Good proper plunger coffee and a coffee machine, and a great selection of teas also.

Negligible interaction with the staff: no one was around at the appointed 10am checkout time, and others had just left their keys at the bar, so we did the same.

Room Tip: I'd opt for a room other than the Pohutukawa, if staying again.

Thank you for spending the time to review us. We have taken on board your experience and will be installing Curtains to pull across the bathroom glass walls.

When I picked this hotel I had not appreciated that it was a very individual, boutique hotel. Lovely room, attentive staff - and an excellent restaurant. An eclectic collection of artwork throughout the hotel adds an extra dimension to your visit - with complementary sherry and port available for guests. Well situated to explore New Plymouth.

Room Tip: It's a city centre hotel - so exposed to some traffic noise - from the positioning of the rooms I assume some are quieter than others.

Just as the name suggests, this is a nice hotel. We stayed here because we were visiting relatives nearby. Lovely room with a small kitchenette, but a huge bathroom and walk in wardrobe. Close to the town centre and walks along the coast. Also close to Pukekura Park.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the main street.
