“Warm and very comfortable, remote and quiet, and very hospitable”
Reviewed 21 May 2009

Our 3rd destination in NZ, and having had 2 great experiences before this, our expectations were already pretty high. As we turned off the main road, following signs for the Mudbrick Lodge, we were wondering where this place was. We were driving through hills and pastures, and grazing cattle, and beautiful scenery. When right at the end of the path, we spotted 2 lovely houses, one being the main house and the other the guest lodge. We drove up and the host, Tania, a very warm and hospitable person, greeted us, and showed us around. The guest lodge only had 2 rooms, one on the ground floor and one above. We were in the ground floor one, which was a little bigger. It was a very large room, with a kitchenette, a great bathroom and spacious sitting area. It has a nice balcony overlooking the fields, hills and gorgeous scenery. It's all a light natural wood colour, making it extra warm and kind of rustic yet very comfortable. It was possibly the quietest place I have ever been too.

The main house where Tania lives is where the meals are served. The dining area also overlooks the hills, and you can enjoy a great meal there.

Since this place was in the middle of nowhere, we opted to dine there that night, and Tania, being a great chef, whipped up a great meal, with a lovely bottle of wine. Make sure to do that at least once.

All soft drinks and beers are included in the price, bottles of wine aren't that expensive, breakfast is amazing! Make sure to have the fluffy omelet and the cereals. Dinners are great too, she makes whatever you want.

The area, though in the middle of nowhere, is not too far from the wine region of Blenheim, the Marlborough Sound, Abel Tasman National Park and the lovely town of Nelson. All in all, it was peaceful and a lot of fun.

I traveled to New Zealand twice over the last five years and Mudbrick
Lodge is my favorite place!! I stayed at Huka and other exclusive lodges but the place I miss the most is Mudbrick. The setting is wonderful, the room has it all - large two person soaking tub, King bed, beautiful shower for two, lots of room - and Tania is great (as is her food). If you're thinking of going to Marlborough (which is well worth it), base yourself at Mudbrick and each day you can return
to a wonderful dinner and a comfortable room, at a reasonable price. You won't be disappointed! I will stay for a week next trip to NZ.

This B&B is a 5 minute drive from the main road but is nestled in its own grounds so that you feel a million miles from anywhere.

The rooms are in a separate building from the main house in a log cabin. The rooms are excellent and offer something a bit different. The shower has a cobble stone floor which is a nice touch.

We arrived late but were still warmly welcolmed into the host's house and offered dinner. We sat and had a drink with them instead and chatted like friends! We got great advice and help with planning our trip to Abel Tasman.

Well worth a visit and would recommend two night stay to do it justice.

The Mudbrick Lodge, halfway between Blenheim and Nelson at the top of the South Island, is a must do experience! A peaceful, relaxing setting - surrounded by rolling hills and gorgeous gardens. The host is a delight, young and enthusiastic without being obtrusive. Really fun and interesting to talk to. Fantastic 3 course meals (Tania is a chef by trade) in a beautiful dining room with great views. We loved our stay here, every detail was perfect. I loved having cups of tea in the kitchen of the main house and the hot spa in the rain, he loved the chair on the verandah, the local green muscle entree and the good wine at dinner. Fantastic, we'll be back and stay longer next time.
