“Nice staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 January 2012

We didn't know what to expect by staying at a YMCA, but it was very similar to the hostels. The room was clean and overlooked the botanical garden. We had a private bath. Walking distance to the Avon Boat House and the downtown ReStart area. The kitchen was closed for the holidays, but the staff gave us some ideas of places to eat. We liked the boat house restraunt for breakfast. We felt 3 earthquakes while we were there, but they were minor, and the staff kept a calm and reassuring attitude.

This was a last minute accommodation in Christchurc on the 24th December, as my plane was diverted to Wellington the day prior due to an earthquake in Christchurch. Being Christmas Eve I thought that it would be a bit busy, but it wasn't. The staff were helpful and accommodating, the single room was on the 4th floor and I had a balcony. The bathroom was clean and I didn't have to wait.

The staff gave me a map and told me some of the best places to get a coffee and something to eat, however due to it being Christmas Eve I didn't hold out much hope of finding either. ( I didn't). The showers were great, hot and nice, the best was nice and comfy. the only thing I found worrysome was the constant tremours which occured, some harder than most. Other than that, the place was great!!

The kitchen was filthy, greasy and mouldy. The staff at check-in were not responsive, even though there was nobody else waiting to be served. There was no explanation or direction as to where the rooms where. They took a key deposit and point blank refused to give it back-therefore they STOLE my money. The worse experience i have EVER had backpacking. There is more reasonably priced, much cleaner and better service to be had in hostels elsewhere in Christchurch.

Room Tip: Just dont go there.

Christchurch has had the heart ripped out of it and it can be difficult to find accomodation in the city centre (even harder to find a restaurant) but the YMCA provides a great base. We had a twin ensuite room which was basic but just what was required and had a lovely view on to the Botanic Gardens. Whilst in Christchurch, you must visit the Botanics - the rose gardens were in full bloom whilst we were there and were stunning.

Top tip - there aren't many eating options near YMCA, so bear this in mind if you don't have transport. There is one restaurant / cafe a block away (opposite uni buildings) which does great food, cakes and coffees.

I have stopped here on two separate occasions in dec 2011 and booked a private single room (one that overlooked the carpark and one that overlooked the arts centre) - both had a partial view of the botanical gardens. Has an onsite cafe which i used and was great as well as the dining room which was very clean and had quite reasonable breakfasts and dinners. Room was very clean and proper bed (no cheap mattresses), plenty of bathrooms to use (some with even baths, Staff were extremely helpful all times i stopped there. Day storage available which is great if you have a flight later in the day and only a couple of minutes to botanical gardens and i-site so you can book any tours.

Room Tip: Try to get one with views of the gardens and definitely pay a bit extra to get your own room

I stayed twice in the Christchurch YMCA: once in a single dorm for 3 nights and after a couple of weeks I spent another night in a collective dorm. There were some common things to both experiences: all the 5 receptionists I had to deal with were at least unfriendly and at the most, plain rude. The common kitchen is ridiculously small: it has only a single fridge, ONE SINK, one microwave and one cooker to be shared between the guests of the 5-storage building. At breakfast/lunch and especially dinner time it gets really crowded and very dirty at the end of the day. The first floor where I stayed smells bad like old sweat. The collective toilets are fairly clean.

The single bedroom was reasonable for the price (but did not have the garden view mentioned in previous reviews) and despite the poor common facilities it has a good price if compared with other accommodation in Christchurch.

If you are planning to stay in a dorm, I would not recommend the YMCA. I booked a bed through the Te Anau i-site and specified that I wanted the smallest dorm available (in this case, a 6 female bed dorm). When I got the hostel, the receptionist tried to push me into a 10 mixed bed dorm. I refused it and then she sent me to a 6 female bed dorm. The mattresses are very thin and the old bunkers are noisy, which compromise the quality of sleep. If that was not enough, among the several travellers that entered the bedroom during the night/ early morning there was a guy. In the ‘female’ dorm. I found the overall attitude dismissive and disrespectful towards customers. If I went back to Christchurch I would not opt for the YMCA again and would definitely not recommend it to my friends.

I stayed at the YMCA a few weeks back. They were excellent and very clean. The rooms are well appointed and the bathrooms are the best I have seen anywhere. Lots of them on every floor, so no waiting for a shower. I had a single room and slept very well. It was great to step outside and know I could walk around town without worrying about parking my car.
