“Very moving memorial”

185 Empty White Chairs - Earthquake Memorial

Found this a very moving place, there is a board telling you why the chairs are there, different sizes. There is a visitors book so you can write comments and postcards that you can take. There is a list of the people who passed . One of the most moving memorials I have ever seen.

Thank Shirley M

A moving reminder of just how devastating the earthquake was in Christchurch. There are still parts of the city untouched from the earthquake, this memorial is just the start of being able to see how the earthquake affected Christchurch and its people.

Very interesting story behind each completely different white chair that represents every poor soul lost in the earthquake. Not a lot to see or tell, you are better off just visiting the nearby CTV site and Cardboard Cathedral and take this in at the same time.

This memorial somewhat quantifies the devastation caused by the earthquake of 2010. The amount of the damage and the on going reconstruction is mind blowing.

We saw this from the bus trip and went back later. We only spent a few minutes, but this is one of the most moving memorials I have seen. Amazing that something so simple can be so poignant. A beautiful tribute to remember those lost in the earthquake.
