This is the best Museum I've seen. A credit to Dunedin. It was so good I went back a second time. Everything here really held my interest. Beautiful presentations with a lot of thought put into them. The local history was enriching and informative. A very spacious place to walk around and you don't get lost or confused. An absolute must do for the whole family. Just stunning.

Probably the best medium sized local museum I have ever had the pleasure of visiting.A complete view of early Otago and Dunedin and therefore an important New Zealand take of this countries early Colonial heritage.

Highly recommend this for a good couple of hours, on your own or with your family. We enjoyed the rich mix of Māori and Pakeha stories here, taking us from the 1800s through to modern day. In fact, two hours wasn't enough.

Our only pondering: we wondered whether the impact of colonial settlers on the Māori way of life might have been more strongly spotlighted but there is still enough here to get a sense of how life unfolded for local iwi were affected.

Second time round for this place and wasn't disappointed. Interactive displays and very helpful staff. Tie the visit in with the railway station as well.

I am impressed by the modern architecture of the entrance. The vast displays in the spacious themed galleries are well laid out. Not stuffy and cluttered (like in some smaller regional museums). The displays include not only Maori history and life of the early settlers from the west in Dunedin and surrounding areas, but also on such themes as transport and technology. Of the special displays, I particularly liked the lithographic prints in Dunedin and The Women's War. There was even a small exhibition on the design of Dunedin's future exhibition venue/cultural centre to be built, to engage citizen discussion. All the displays are accompanied by detailed information.
There's a nice on-site souvenir shop and cafe.
Highly recommended.

Thank A Y
