“So great to stay at a Genuine Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2012

We stayed in the Lodge, the rooms were excellent, fantastic iews, clean and tidy, ncie little personal touches to add to the "theme" of the place. Staff were fantastic, dinner in the Castle dining room was superb and breakfast in the stables perfect. Well worth a stay. Our stay in Lodge included castle tour as our own leisure which was excellent.

Room Tip: If you can afford it stay at the Lodge although the Stables are brilliant as well.

We stayed two nights in the stables. When we arrived there was someone already waiting for us at the entrance to get us all checked in. The Room was clean and beds were nice pillows were good too. Was really cool knowing that you were staying in an actual stables all done up with private rooms and shared bathroom, the showers were hot and the pressure was great. The breakfast was lovely, cereal and cooked breaky aswel! the kitchen staff were wonderful. The bonus of staying here is the pleasure of walking around the beautiful castle (with wonderful gardens) whenever you please and free entry to the Larnach castle aswel. The drive there along the cliff was a great view! I would highly recommend staying there =)

There aren't many castles in New Zealand - this is in a spectacular location and the superior lodge rooms have amazing views over the Otago Peninsular. The staff are great and the dinner in the castle is not to be missed

Room Tip: always choose a superior balcony room

We stayed one night in Larnach Castle for our honeymoon. We stayed in the forest room which was all that was available at the time. Our room was not luxury, but adequate and quaint. The staff was extraordinarily friendly, accommodating, and eager to help. We had dinner at the castle and got to meet others staying here. The one hostess, Gwen, was very helpful.
We walked around the grounds in the morning and toured the castle which was very interesting. There is an excellent view from the keep tower. On site is a small gift shop which has some interesting items. They serve breakfast in the stable and you choose an item from a small menu supplemented by a few other items. The road getting here though was scary. I would not want to drive it in the dark.

Larnach Castle is a very well-preserved mansion which has a lodge attached. The rooms are quaint with great views of the bay and the Otago Peninsula. Our mattress was a bit worn out, but the room was good anyhow. The dinner was fine and worth the money. We got to meet some of our fellow-travelers at the dinner table (there were eleven of us for dinner). We ate in the main dining room of the historic castle. The chef prepared a very nice selection for us. The hotel is well-placed for viewing the Otago Peninsula and its wildlife (albatross, penquins, etc) but it is not located very close to Dunedin city - you've got to have some transportation as there is no public service transport nearby.

Room Tip: A room on the top floor (2nd floor) offers the better views of the water.

This is a simple case study of how bad managers single-handedly can make even small and seemingly meaningless decisions that destroy a hotel's reputation. Despite very mixed reviews here regarding the staff, we decided to book a room. Our reservation was not for another six weeks, but THREE days after making our booking we had a change in plans. Recognizing that the hotel had a 10% cancellation policy, we called to explain our straight forward situation. Having traveled extensively for business and pleasure our entire lives, my wife and I were sure that management would not charge us the 10% fee since there were over five weeks left until our planned arrival date (there's not a half-decent hotel we can think of that wouldn't cooperate as a good customer service gesture). To our surprise, when we called the staff told us they would have to get management approval and that they would put it down as "serious illness." We told them this was not the case, but waited for a response. When the reception manager, Leanne [--], emailed back (4 days later), she told us she would only give us a refund if we sent her a doctor's letter. We could have easily falsified one and done this, but would never do that. Instead, we responded explaining how strange it was that she would make such a request for a mere 10%??? We again asked her to make an exception and return our money, explaining that we would be returning to Duneden at a later date and would likely book a new reservation then. Her final reply to us was simply to point us to the hotel's cancellation policy. Amazing! Trying to cancel a reservation three days after making it, with five-plus weeks to go, being asked for a "doctor's note," and being told the 10% is a "handling fee" (what does that mean this day and age when you make an internet-based reservation), simply an incredible case of bad management decisions. That's all we needed to know. We recommend you spend your money on a place that cares a bit more about its current and future customers.

We would like to acknowledge the reviewers feedback.
There a couple of points that should be clarified, our cancellation policy is a standard industry policy. If we believe there has been a cancellation due to illness we are happy to refund 100% of the deposit, on receipt of documentation that supports this. In this case we believed that this was the case. Our reception staff took instruction from management to implement our company policy. At all times our staff were extremely courteous and professional and conveyed these cancellation procedures clearly with email communication.
We hope the reviewer has the opportunity to visit us in the future and enjoy all that Larnach Lodge has to offer.

Half our family stayed in the stables and the others stayed in the lodge. The stables were fine although the walls are thin and I could here my neighbors very clearly late into the night. The lodge room stayed in was the rose room an was very comfortable with a magnificent view (however when we first walked in there was quite a pungent odour that soon dissipated). The breakfast provided was amazing, really nice, one of the best we had all holiday. We also had dinner in the castle which I would recommend for anyone, excellent value and amazing food with an excellent hostess.
