“Really good rooms”
Reviewed 28 January 2012

Our family of 4 had 2 rooms across the hall from each other, something that, curiously, it seems not a lot of hotels seem to manage even when requested well in advance. Really good buffet breakfast; rooms were quite spacious for motel rooms and it was nice to be able to open the windows for some fresh air; convenient laundry facilities in-house (on 2 floors); reasonable location (only a 5 min walk into the Octagon area of the city. Very impressed with the prompt return of some lost property via courier at a very reasonable price - thanks!!!

Room Tip: There's more room to spread out/more spare floor space in the rooms with 2 queen sized beds.

Good central location and impressive building. We had a superior room which was most comfortable.

Meals in the resturant were very good, the bar menu was a bit different and it did seem a little odd having the same menu available in the two and at the same prices which defeats the object of bar and resturant.

Good breakfast buffet with a nice selection of all items. Service was extremely good and the staff were very friendly and attentive.

Would certainly return

The buffet breakfast is the best that I have had in all the hotels that I have stayed in in NZ.
The bed was the softest most cloud like bed that I have ever stayed in. They include a pillow menu in the room pack. Which I find great as most hotels only give you the manky manmade fibre ones which are too hard. My partner, whom is allergic to dust and feathers didn't find the goose down bedding a problem. Great news for me!
We stayed in a mid range room and it was fantastic. Very spacious and included a sofa.
Didn't have free cookies though.
The staff were very welcoming and courtious.
I strongly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Dunedin.
Watch out for the parking though - it's $11.50 a night and they expect you to hand over your keys. The hotel is quite central though - and is next to the casino and a few bars.
The TV had a good selection of channels, including sky movies and 3 sports channels.

The Southern Cross is the best hotel I've stayed in in Dunedin. We had a superior room and I would recommend paying the extra money rather than taking a standard room. The extra space is worth it. Have stayed in a standard room before and the room and bathroom are both very cramped. Not the case with the superior. The bed is amazing - huge king and very comfortable. We didn't weant to leave. Great location - we walked to the Octogon for dinner and was a short and safe stroll home later at night. Casino is right next door. Only downside is having to pay for parking. Other than that - highly recommend.

There are two parts to this large hotel, each with their own set of lifts to access the guest rooms. Between them lie a casino,a coffee shop, and a bar. My room on a high floor of the part further away from reception appeared to have been recently refurbished. It had all the expected facilities, including a comfortable bed. One disadvantage was that to use the two coin-operated laundry facilities it was necessary to go down to the ground floor, walk through the casino lobby, and then go up in the lifts in the other part of the building. Three trips - one to put the clothes in, two to move them to the dryer, and three to collect them. Maybe laundry facilities could be provided in both parts of the hotel? While the service was fine, it was a bit impersonal - I don't remember being called by name by any of the staff throughout my visit. The restaurant was also perfectly acceptable without being outstanding in any way - one item I had ordered had to be changed because of "an incident in the kitchen". The location is reasonably convenient for the Octagon at the centre of Dunedin and the fantastic railway station. There are also very good shopping facilities nearby.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the refurbished rooms. If you need to use the laundry, try for a room in the same pa...

We arrived in Dunedin after traveling for about 8 days in a big group and I loved this hotel. It was value for money. The beds were such a relief after many days on the road and extremely comfortable. We booked a standard room and I have no complaints about it even though the view was that of the hypermarket opposite. The casino is just nearby and there is a delightful bar.

Our tour group stayed for 2 nights. We found the hotel ideally placed for getting out and about. Our room was comfortable and very quiet at night. Breakfast was good, as was the one evening meal we had in the hotel. Service was very pleasant and generally more efficient than many of the hotels we stayed in over a 5 week period.

Room Tip: If you need a quiet room, ask staff for advice - some sides of the building appeared to be more pron...
