While in Invercargill recently for our grandson's soccer tournament, we took the opportunity between games to get out of the rain & cold. We intended to go to the Speights Ale House but we could not get a handy car park, so we headed to the Kiln to try & warm up and grab a bite to eat. We sat beside the gas fire and ordered our meals. Grandson chose the chicken tenders, hubby chose the beef burger and fries and I chose the Salt & Pepper Squid Salad - salad being the operative word. The plate was full of salad and there were only 7 small pieces of squid placed round the edge of the plate - come on chef, don't be so stingy!!! Squid isn't an endangered species and isn't that expensive! I would have been lucky to have been given a quarter of one!! I was still hungry after that so ordered a dessert - Vanilla Panna Cotta served with cream, ice cream and a berry compote. This was very nice although was slightly firm textured - more than the recipe I make. Grandson ordered the White Chocolate & Raspberry Cheesecake. This was a huge portion - 13 year old grandson only ate about a quarter of it. Hubby & I tried to finish it for him, but it was very sickly - no white chocolate or raspberry flavour - just cream cheese - no wonder he didn't finish his favourite dessert! Think the Kiln will be off our eating places in Invercargill for quite a while.
