“Great value, terrific staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2012

We stayed in early January (ie peak season) in the 2 bedroom apartment with our family (2 Adults and 2 teens) and one Grandpa in a share dorm (3 share, but he only ever had one other person in the room) for 3 nights and were very comfortable, had heaps of room, enjoyed our own kitchen and bathroom with awesome shower and all within easy walking distance to town and all activities. The staff are FABULOUS, they were so enthusiastic, helpful and patient with our 12 and 15 year olds endless questions about the activities in Queenstown and gave us great advice about the best things to enjoy. It's simple, clean and comfortable, best of all it's really great value in a town where everything costs more than you might expect. We'd happily stay here again. Being just that little bit out of town (10 min flat walk along the beautiful lake) meant we had quiet nights and good sleep.

Room Tip: The 2 bedroom apartment is a perfect set up for a family of four, avoid the "fold out bed"...

Stayed just after Christmas for a couple of nights with my partner in a twin room. Unlike the YHA in Wanaka, the staff were more than happy to accept my partner's prepaid vouchers in part-payment which was really helpful. The room was probably the smallest room I've seen and doesn't really grant you any space for your luggage but was comfortable enough. Kitchen facilities were reasonable. The hostel appeared to attract the more mature traveller (I'm 30, my partner 27, and apart from the staff on reception I think we were the youngest people in the building by 10-15 years) which gave it the feel of an old people's home . If you're travelling and looking to meet up with lively people you'd have the worst time ever here, but if all you're after is a bed and you're not banking on socialising with the other guests then it'll do fine. At least there wasn't any risk of being woken at 3am by late-returning revellers. The location is great and 20 yards over the road you can sit in peace and quiet and have a beer with your toes in the lake on an evening, which for people from the UK to be able to do on Boxing day is quite something.

There were five of us in a group so we stayed in a dormitory for six. Thankfully, there was no sixth person so we had the room to ourselves. The hostel is located at the lakefront as the name implies, so it's beautiful. The other hostel in Queenstown (Central) is located right in the city - better location with everything at the doorstep. But we chose this one as we had a car, so distance was not an issue, plus the rate is a couple dollars cheaper. Good savings as there were five of us. The room was small but then again, so are all the other backpackers and hostels. No big deal.

I love the kitchens at all the YHAs that we stayed in NZ. They are all so well organized and clean, (in fact the whole hostel chain is very well organized). The kitchens are very well equipped although most of the pots and pans had seen their better days. At this YHA, the kitchen is located on the "mezzanine" floor, on the same level with the internet and entertainment rooms (TV and lounge). Very nice set up and comfortable.

We initially booked to stay only one night in Queenstown but then stayed on another night. I was glad we did as Queenstown is such a happening town, among all the other cities/towns we have visited. This lakefront hostel is not too far to the city centre. We enjoyed the walk into the city and along the harborside overlooking Lake Wakatipu. It's beautiful and peaceful.

The reception staff were very helpful. I forgot her name, but there was a Japanese girl who assisted me when I wanted to make changes to our onward stay. She was very pleasant to deal with and gave good suggestions with our itinerary.

Great place to stay, as in all the other seven YHAs that we stayed in during our travel throughout South NZ. Highly recommended! :)

Room Tip: Although this is a Lakefront hostel, there are very few rooms facing the lake. We got a room with a...

We stayed in the 4 mixed/share room for 1 night and apartment for 4 nights.
1. The mixed share room, is small; the shared kitchen, toilet and bathroom, are clean;
2. The apartment, I heard is the only one, is big, comfortable, with full kitchen and bathroom, but the room is behind the building, so you can't see the lake from room.
Location, a walking distance to town. Great view from public kitchen *****(5 stars dining environment=>view)! Bus stop just outside the hostel.

Room Tip: Ask for lake view.

I was contemplating driving on to Kinloch for a quieter location when I passed YHA Lakefront.

Decided straightaway that it was suitable. Dorm rooms at $30 (ten beds) and $35 (three beds). Chose the latter and was very glad that I did because I ended up having the room all to myself :D.

Facilities are all excellent. One minor complaint : the wall between the lounge and the three-bedded room I was in was so thin that I could hear the conversation going on in the former, among a group of 12 teens. But that quietened down after 11.30pm, thankfully.

Kitchen was a very comfortable size to allow six or eight different parties to do food prep at the same time.

Will definitely return on next visit ... next year!

Room Tip: Where possible, choose a room that is not on the same level as the common areas.

We stayed in a private double for 4 nights. The staff at check-in were helpful and friendly. The room was quite small with no-where to put anything. The room was above the unofficial smoking area so it wasn’t possible to keep the window open as the room smelt a bit stuffy. When we entered the floor hadn’t been cleaned and there was a hair on the pillow. They said they would hoover the floor but they never did. The bin was emptied daily.
The kitchen was nice, well equipped and a good size. The YHA seems to be popular with Asian tourists and when they were cooking there were no pans or plates for other people. There were herbs and spices provided, and Tupperware also provided.
The shared bathrooms were good and normally clean. They had hairdryers for use.
The location was 10-15 minutes walk from the main part of town. Walking back at night was not a problem. It is on the lakefront and very picturesque. It was quiet and we felt safe. They have a door code after 10pm but it’s changed every few days (we found out the hard way that this was every two days)

We were staying in a 4 star apartment with friends, when due to bad weather our flights were cancelled, and we rapidly had to reconsider accommodation options due to finances, with the group slowly decreasing in size as more flights became available.

YHA Lakefront became a good alternative! It is close to town, 5 mins walk to shops and restaurants. The beautiful lake is just across the road and we never tired of the view! Despite the central location it is surprisingly quiet at night, and we were never disturbed by other people either inside or outside the hostel.

Limited parking is available off road, but there is also free parking along the road. However, unless you are planning trips further away, or are travelling through, you may not need a car.

Staying in a family room is obviously more expensive than the dorm rooms. In return we had a private bathroom and kitchen, making this into a proper self contained apartment. The kitchen was well equipped with pots and pans (actually, better than the previous 4 star apartment!), although the crockery did not match, and some dishes were stained and dirty when we arrived thus requiring proper washing. This is common in hostels without dishwashers, and of course dependent on previous guests. The bathroom was adequate. There was a shower above a bath, and even a hairdryer provided.

The family room had a master bedroom with double bed, wardrobe and reading lamps. There was a second bedroom with bunk beds, shelving and reading lamp. Beds were comfortable. The dining area attached to the kitchen had a table and chairs, also sofa/lounge chairs and TV. Sliding doors opened to a small patio outside.

Overall it was adequately clean, perhaps a bit worn in terms of furnishings. Then again, this is a youth hostel not a 4 star apartment, and you get what you pay for!

The staff at reception were knowledgeable and friendly. Internet access was available for a small fee, with a huge amount of terminals. Reception can arrange cheap transport to the airport. Staff can also advice on cheap eating options, with discount vouchers.
