An excellent 40th Wedding Anniversary at the Inn

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 22, 2017
We were on an overnight trip for our 40th anniversary. Our daughter made all the arrangements with the Inn. It was such a surprise. They fell over backwards to organize the trip with our daughter. They suggested all sorts of things to my daughter, arranged the events, and got the best prices for her. My wife is a vegetarian and they took that into account too. It was a fantastic success overall. The accommodation itself was very interesting and different. History at a very reasonable price! The deck over the river is wonderful. Their cocktails are at the best we have ever tried. I don't think that we have had a better stay and I wish them every success - the really deserve it on the evidence of this.

My sister, my niece, and I stayed at Steamers for four nights in mid-April, 2017. Our hosts Gary and Lisa could not have been more hospitable and helpful. The breakfasts were always hot, hearty enough for a soldier, and varied each day. (The to-die-for maple syrup was very dark and top quality!) Especially appreciated were Gary's skill at bartending, and his innovative cocktail recipes. Above and beyond the call of duty, Gary and Lisa also gave me tremendously valuable and much appreciated input on a speech which I was writing. So we look forward to staying at Steamers again whenever we travel to Gagetown Village.

This is a very pleasant place to stay, the rooms are furnished with beautiful heritage pieces, the beds are clean and comfortable. Good to have ensuite bath/shower in each guest room. The breakfasts that we were served were hot and tasty.
The bar and tea room maintains good hours for a hot or cold beverage at a reasonable price. Service is prompt and friendly.
We enjoyed the river view from room 6.

As a customer of a bed and breakfast, I have certain expectations. As for the breakfast half of the business, we were served a plate with one egg, a few potatoes from a frozen bag, one slice of toast, and half way through, coffee. We smelled bacon but were not served this. One of the cats did join us, sitting in a car next to us, walking across the table.
As for the bed part, it was adequate. However there was no television reserved for guests. I was welcomed to join the owners as they ate dinner and watched their favorite show.
Not a way to grow a business.

Thank you for your review. Even negative reviews allow us the chance to connect with our past and future guests and assure them of a quality experience, as well it gives us the opportunity to improve.

Let me address your comments about the breakfast portion of your stay. Breakfast orders are taken the night before and it is explained that breakfast is served family style in the breakfast room (which guests are shown). Family style means hot food is served in large bowls or plates, along with; yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee, juice, etc. for the guest to help themselves. Eggs however are cooked to order and naturally are served separately. I suspect you were served your eggs and fresh toast where ever you selected to sit to eat (hashbrowns would normally be served in a large bowl, but with
only two guests Brent may have made an exception), and you neglected to proceed to the breakfast room to serve up the remainder of your breakfast. Upon seeing you had not gotten yourselves your coffee, coffee was likely brought to you as a courtesy. I do apologize in that the cat was not noticed and removed.

Our property is a turn of the century building and our rooms are themed as such which does not include televisions. Most Bed and Breakfasts share one common room where guests and hosts typically interact which is the case with our television room. In addition however our property has multiple areas to relax including the library or the main sitting room. Please keep in mind that when staying at a Bed and Breakfast you are staying in someones home.

Reviewing the feedback you have left to other accommodations along your travels, may I suggest that perhaps your accommodation needs would be better served by larger chain hotels.

    Regards.

An overly ambitious venture by inexperienced innkeepers. No food was available as promised for our late evening arrival, neither at the b&b or anywhere in town. Breakfast was barely edible in spite of our hunger. The beautiful house was a mess with owners' belongings everywhere. The bed was okay, but the comforter smelled like cats. We needed the comforter because it was 38 degrees Fahrenheit and the house had no heat! The litter box in the front room and the food bowls in the hallway by our room should have tipped us off. If there was anyplace else to go we would have left. A bad value at any price, and we were charged way too much. Beware.

I am sorry to see that you were very displeased with your stay. Indeed we are very new to Bed and Breakfast industry, and humbly accept all criticism, even reviews such as yours as they allow us to grow and learn about our industry and our guests. Because your review paints our venture in such a ill light I will do my best to address each point in turn as best I can. Unfortunately I personally was not present during your stay due to being called out of town as my other occupation sometime demands, so I cannot respond with first hand knowledge of your stay in all matters.

Firstly regarding your lack of late meal. Prior to your booking we had discussed that the restaurants in town would likely be closed and because of our licensing we are not able to serve meals beyond breakfast hours, I recommended finding a meal prior to arrival but if necessary we could to attempt to arrange something for you if you required it. You did not follow up with this, and we cannot simply break the governments food service regulations and risk our business to suit late arriving guests. I apologize if my attempt to assist you in this matter was misunderstood and caused you difficulty. As for breakfast guests are typically asked for their choice of food and what time they would like to have it the night before. "Inedible" implies that your food was likely cold, and I have to question if this was a result of not being down at the time you had arranged. If you had a problem with the quality of the breakfast or the food served I wish you had brought it up at the time as it is hard to make a guest's stay better if they do not voice their needs.

Yes we have cats, and we make certain that our guests are aware of them at the time of booking because we are cognizant that this does not suit everyone, and we would rather see a visitor to the Village have a pleasant stay at one of the other available B&Bs (Langhaus B&B, is also open year round) if this is a problem. They do have a food and water dish in an upstairs sitting area, however their liter box is located in our private bathroom, so I am highly skeptical of your comment about it being in the front room.

As for your heating concern, admittedly the timing of the furnace installer was unfortunate, as we were in the process of upgrading the two old fuel oil furnaces to modern central air heat pump units before temperatures dropped. While I am sure 38 degrees Fahrenheit is quite the exaggeration, I can sympathize that the night time temperature was below your comfort level.

Potential guests are welcome to compare our rates and the services we offer and come to their own conclusion as to what constitutes, and the rates you were charged are well published. In fact as other reviews show we do offer various discounts and encourage new guests to enquire at the time of booking to take full advantage of these.

I am sorry that your visit wasn't as pleasant as it should have been, and we are committed to providing our guests with a wonderful experience. Please contact us with your credit card information and we will fully refund you the cost of your accommodation, as we stand behind the quality of our venture.

We just stayed here for a quick overnight getaway for our anniversary. Last time we stayed here was in 2000. While the inn is under new management, it still has the same charm and history.
The owners son was fabulous. He was very happy to answer any questions we had about the history of the building, and talk about the work they will be doing, as well as the updates they have made. He was even so kind as to start up the old crank record player for us. Loved it!
So happy this wonderful place has been reopened, and by people that seem very keen on restoring it. Mostly exterior work needs to be done.

My only real critique would be that Gavin four pillows on a bed is great. Perhaps two firm and two soft, though, rather than just four firm. It was a bit like sleeping with a brick. Other than that, our room was great. We had a nice view of the river. It was clean and comfortable, and very much in tune with the history of the building.

They also offer a military discount for members of the armed forces. That was a nice little bonus.

We will definitely be back again!
