“Housekeeping let it down”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2012

We stayed at hotel urban last weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had booked a round room and had 2 emails confirming but on arrival they had given the room to someone else. To be fair, the guy at reception immediately acknowledged this mistake and said they would move the other people into the correct room - about 15 minutes later we were able to enter our room. The bed looked lovely but there were a couple of dire things in regard to housekeeping - when we opened the curtains behind was filthy (see photo) and there were two hideously filthy glasses left by the bottle of red, plus a pube in the sink....mmmm noice....
We called and asked for new glasses and they arrived promptly. Later the same nice guy from reception told us that the glasses were from the people who were incorrectly in our room (hope they didn't use the bed!!). I guess the hair must have been from them too. Fair enough, but the dirty windowsills could have been cleaner and there are quite a few broken tiles etc. too.
That being said, I found the staff great, the breaky was pretty yummy (although my husband’s pancakes were served cold and both meals took forever to arrive), it's in a great location and the spa is terrific as is the bed. There is also off street parking which is good.
I would probably give it another chance

Hi MelbourneMontymum,

We're sorry to hear about the housekeeping issues that you experienced upon your arrival. How great is the Round Room with the comfortable Urban Snorer beds and relaxing spa though.

We're glad to hear that we were able to turn your experience around and that you're willing to give us another chance. We'll be waiting here with open arms to welcome you back in the future.

Thank you very much for your honest review as we appreciate all feedback.

Kind Regards

My friend and I traveled across Australia this February and stayed at the Urban while in Melbourne. St. Kilda definitely was the right choice in terms of location. Fritzroy area was considered but St. Kilda worked best. Looking at other reviews we decided to stay at the Urban. The hotel definitely satisfied out requirements. The room was small, but clean. It had two twin beds and was very comfortable overall. The bathroom had amenities for two people and house keeping was done on a daily basis. The location on Fritzroy street can get very busy during the weekend but that was no trouble at all for us. There are enough bars and restaurants on Fritzroy street and the beach is only about 5 mins walk away. The tram also stops right outside the hotel to take you to CBD or Fritzroy. Overall good location and hotel.

Hi Yeshwant N,

Fitzroy is a great suburb, but you just can't beat St Kilda ;-) Our location is one of the many great positives of our hotel - although with so many great bars, restaurants and cafes nearby sometimes it's hard to choose.

We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Australia and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Kind Regards

I stayed at the Hotel Urban only a few weeks ago, it was very disappointing. Outside our hotel room door there was a massive hole in the ceiling, which showed all the pipe work etc. It was evident that other areas of the ceiling had also been touched up and filled in to a poor standard. No milk was provided in the room to accompany the coffee and tea making facilities, despite asking at reception several times we managed to catch the house keepers. We had breakfast one morning which was average, the room is very dark and the lighting could do with being better. Our room was not cleaned to a high standard and we had mentioned that the duvet was stained and it was just wrapped between two sheets, however this never got changed and we got sick of asking. When coming back to the hotel at night there are a lot of homeless people asking for money which is a bit off putting. The only positive was the location and use of the MACs for free. My tip is save your money and book somewhere else.

Hi Kylie1810,

Sorry to hear that the hotel wasn’t to your liking and that you didn’t enjoy your time. It’s disappointing to hear that you thought breakfast was average as we usually get rave reviews. Hopefully your next stay in Melbourne is more enjoyable.

Kind Regards

Good location in St Kilda however we were on the 4th floor and as mentioned in earlier reviews there was a bad smell on the corridor and in our room. We were offered a change of room but didn't have the confidence this would make any difference. The person on reception appeared surprised but sent one of the cleaners to the room with a carpet freshener. She told us that there is a problem with the air conditioning and this is the cause of the bad smell. The walls appear to be paper thin (this was confirmed by reception staff) and every noise from the adjacent rooms could be heard.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We're sorry to hear you didn’t think the room change would make a difference, we do try our best to come up with a solution if a guest lets us know they're not happy about something.

My sister and I stayed for a long weekdn in October 2011. The hotel is good, clean, size of room plenty big enough for 2 people. We had brekky every day at Suger, good service, good food. Great location, not far from the beach, market on Sunday and a nice walk to Akland St.
Tram stops just outside the door, only a short ride to the CBD, staff extremely helpful with directions, things to do & see. (Shopping, shopping, shopping!)
No problems to leave our bags till our room was ready & also on our departure.
Great restaurants all round the area.
To top off a great weekend NZ won the Rugby World Cup!

Room Tip: Don't always believe the neatives on this site, some peope are hard to please.

Hi Berniejh,

Love the "shopping, shopping, shopping!" - sounds like you and your sister would be fun to go on a little holiday with!

It's awesome having so many great restaurants in the area, the only problem is that it's so hard to choose which one to go to when they're all so good.

…The only thing I'm not too sure about is NZ winning the Rugby World Cup ;-) So glad to hear you had a great weekend and look forward to welcoming you two back at St Kilda.

Kind Regards,

First up the location is to die for. Right in the heart of the vibey, pulsating, restaurant/bar area of St Kilda. Only a 5-min walk to Acland St, Luna Park and many famous pubs. We stayed two nights on a busy public holiday weekend but yet received stellar service form the staff here. I hope the management reads this because Amy and Mareeka (nfi how to spell that!) were excellent at their job providing prompt, knowledgeable, friendly assistance and this really gave URBAN a point of difference to other places where we have recently stayed.

Our stay wasn't without its problems (the first room we got had problems with the toilet flushing correctly) but these were addressed instantly without fuss (we were upgraded to a larger/ nicer room!). The bed and pillows in particular in both rooms were sensationally comfortable.

Our package worked out to $180 per night including free access to the St Kilda baths and free in room breakfast plus a late checkout on the Sunday of 2:00! The breakfast were delicious and the free access to the St Kilda baths was so terrific as it saved us $26 a day and allowed us to walk from URBAN to there (about 4min walk) and do a workout/swim and burn off the calories attained by dining, drinking etc in this exciting, eclectic strip full of tremendous options for enjoying oneself. The St Kilda baths are located on the beach and so to frolick along the beach after an intense bit of exercise was also a wonderful sensation.

Couldn't recommend the place highly enough - especially so if the same staff are on hand.

Hi MarcusGeelong,

We always love hearing from a fellow St Kilda lover! You could get us talking (writing) for hours about all the things we love about the area.

How good are the Urban Snorer beds! Some of us here at head office are seriously considering purchasing them for our homes. What a pain about the toilet not flushing correctly, but kind of cool that it happened given that you ended up with a better room ;-)

So glad to hear you took advantage of your free access to St Kilda Sea Baths, and your frolic along on the beach sounds a bit exciting!

We'll be sure to pass on your lovely comments to Amy and Marieke.

Thank you so much for your review!

Kind Regards,

Fabulous location. Right in the heart of the restaurant & bar scene and only a couple of minutes walk to beautiful St Kilda beach.
Hotel Urban is a quirky little boutique style hotel. Its nothing spectacular but it modern, clean and the rooms/beds/pillows very comfortable. I received fabulous service from the hotel Manager when my TV wouldn't work and was made to feel very welcome over the weekend stay.
I had a room right on the street front and didn't hear any noise from the street below. The same cant be said about the noise coming from the room next door, but I guess this can happen in any hotel.
Suger the cafe/bar did fabulous coffee & breakfast but the service was slow and could have been alot friendlier. This changed Monday morning when the manager was back in the building.
I would reccomend this hotel to couples & friends travelling - it was perfect for me as a solo traveller & I felt safe and comfortable there on my own (I was stuck in Melbourne over the weekend due to business meetings on Friday & Monday - no point travelling back to NZ)

Room Tip: The spa bath was a nice additiona after a day on the beach

Hi KiwiGirl69,

When travelling on your own it's so important to feel safe and comfortable, and we're really happy you felt that way with us. Just as importantly, it's great to hear you ended up having a fun weekend stay in Melbourne!

Our General Manager is lovely and we're glad he got your TV back in action. We're very pleased to hear you took advantage of the delicious breakfast and coffee available at Suger Café Bar, we're often adding new things to the menu too :-)

It sounds like you had a great service experience, but we're not sure why service would have been slower and not as friendly on the Saturday, were staff really busy? Regardless, being busy isn't really an excuse and we'll see what happened there.

Thanks for your review and we look forward to seeing you next time you're in Melbourne!

Kind Regards,
Caitlin
