Impressed by the number of activities that are possible on or around the river. Even in winter there was life on the river.

Quite a wide river through Wanganui.
Access to the mouth is possible on the north side.
A paddle steamer operates from Wanganui in the summer.
Away from town the road following the river gives many opportunities to view the river. The Wanganui River Road to Matahuwi and Pipiriki is windy with numerous land slips along the way which were being cleaned up when we went through. Sometimes the road is closed. It is a very long trip from the highway 4 and eventually back onto the highway 4 at Raetihi. Will take about 4 hours.
There are river adventure activities on offer along the way including a jetboat to "The Bridge to Nowhere". Would pay to bring your own food and drink.

A few years ago we, as a family, decided to do Christmas on the river. There were 4 adults and 3 children. We had an adult and a child in 2 Canadian Canoes & 2 adults and 1 child in Kayaks. We hopped in at Whakahoro & popped out in Pipiriki 4 days later. An absolute life changing experience, there were a couple of scary bits in between as river was slightly in flood but wow what a game changer it was amazing!!

An easy 2 hour excursion during which you get to learn a little history of the town, the river, and the Waimarie, the restored steamer you travel on. Run by warm, friendly locals there's a good blend of recorded commentary and Captain's comments on the day. Lovely touches were getting to climb down steps to the guys in the boiler room for a close up look at the machinery plus releasing homing pigeons for the kids at the half way point to take their messages back to the departure point. I'm guessing we might have been 100 passengers plus on board which it handled easily. Everywhere gets a good view, inside or out ,and there's even a little café onboard for a beer and a sandwich. A good fun little Kiwi style excursion well worth doing.

This review covers the Wanganui River Road that is accessed from State Highway 4, about 14 kilometres northeast of the city. Once you are on the road it winds alongside the river. Initially, you climb a long hill and are rewarded with a great view at the top, along the gorge. From then on it's a very winding route which, to be honest, gets a little tiresome but is very picturesque. Probably, it's more rewarding to take one of the kayak trips up the river itself.
There's a very beautiful marae at Ranana. At Jerusalem (Hiruharama) you can stop to visit St Joseph's church and the convent. There's also a little shop serving ice creams, chips (crisps) and the like - you are served through the window by a cheerful local. It's almost bizarre to come across this after such a long drive along this unpopulated route.
Another 10km north of Jerusalem and you reach Pipiriki where the road heads east to Raetihi. At this point (Pipiriki) the road ends and, if you want to continue to follow the river, you'll need a boat! There's access here to the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge, Jetboat and other adventures.
