Stunning sights and views, reputation of a dirty river, but one that is utilised so well by the locals and revered by local Maori. Absolutely stunning. Took a trip up on the Wairua and was entertained well by the skipper and a lovely man called Phillip. Great day

Don't worry if you're not a canoeist. You can still get up close and personal with the mighty Whanganui River by joining Rory Smith's superb small-group tours up the River Road. These five-hour trips depart by comfortable van from Tamara Backpackers Lodge and take in all the major points of interest, including Koriniti, Jerusalem (Hiruharama), the convent and church of Sister Suzanne Aubert, the lovely old Kawana Mill, and Pipiriki.

Prepare for epic riverine scenery, upland views of astonishing beauty and a stream of highly informative commentary from Rory, who is a superb host, and distills decades of local knowledge into an entertaining mix of history, gossip and anecdote. He also keeps a flask of hot coffee at the ready. A superb tour. Don't miss it.

Impressed by the number of activities that are possible on or around the river. Even in winter there was life on the river.

Quite a wide river through Wanganui.
Access to the mouth is possible on the north side.
A paddle steamer operates from Wanganui in the summer.
Away from town the road following the river gives many opportunities to view the river. The Wanganui River Road to Matahuwi and Pipiriki is windy with numerous land slips along the way which were being cleaned up when we went through. Sometimes the road is closed. It is a very long trip from the highway 4 and eventually back onto the highway 4 at Raetihi. Will take about 4 hours.
There are river adventure activities on offer along the way including a jetboat to "The Bridge to Nowhere". Would pay to bring your own food and drink.

A few years ago we, as a family, decided to do Christmas on the river. There were 4 adults and 3 children. We had an adult and a child in 2 Canadian Canoes & 2 adults and 1 child in Kayaks. We hopped in at Whakahoro & popped out in Pipiriki 4 days later. An absolute life changing experience, there were a couple of scary bits in between as river was slightly in flood but wow what a game changer it was amazing!!
