Owner description: Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry in Northland, New Zealand. The Gardens are open to the public and feature subtropical gardens, native forest walks, waterfalls, streams, quarry ruins, tunnels, a scented Camellia collection, a plethora of NZ native and exotic plant species and so much more... The Gardens are a work in progress and have been created through the blood, sweat, tears and laughter of volunteers, supporting companies and other interest groups. Entry is by GOLD-COIN DONATION, with all proceeds used to purchase plants and equipment. Thanks!

We went to the quarry as it had been recommended by a friend. What a delightful place to visit. There are so many pathways to follow. Lots of families all enjoying the space. It has a fabulous cafe where you can buy food. I liked the ' sense' garden. A great idea to promote discussion with the younger family members. The idea of hiring a golf cart to explore the grounds makes it accessible for many people. Great thinking! I loved the waterfall and the lake too. Such a lot to take photos of.
Well done all the volunteers. It was a hidden gem.

I recently visited the gardens and cafe with a close friend. This is an amazing place and the local volunteers and Council have achieved a beautiful space from an old quarry. They hold art exhibitions here on various occasions which enhance the use of these gardens. So much work is done by the volunteers which will blow your mind. The cafe has excellent food and a lovely ambience. You must book. Enjoy.

We visited the quarry to view the gardens and the restaurant which was closed as it was a Monday. Nevertheless, I found the gardens exceptionally beautiful and was impressed that they are maintained by volunteers, some of whom were working in the garden.
We walked around marvelling at the various types of trees and plants. The bromeliad gardn was very striking as well as the large magnolias.
You could spend a leisurely few hours here especially if the restaurant is then open for a snack or lunch.

Aaaahhh, so restful, so beautiful, such a dedicated bunch of volunteers. The cafe is lovely, maybe at bit more pricy, but this didn't deterr us from spending time in paradise.
