Owner description: Shantytown is a leading New Zealand culture and heritage attraction. Made up of over 30 historic buildings it is a faithfully recreated 19th century pioneer town, inspired by the West Coast gold rushes of the 1860s. Highlights include riding the steam train, gold panning, the Beehive store with its range of traditional confectionery and the opportunity to have an old time photo portrait taken as a memento of your visit.

We went here 10 years ago and have been meaning to go back.
Despite the dull weather we had a good day. Enjoyed the old buildings and steam train. 6 year old loved the gold panning. Café was good as far as park cafes go.
Need to give a special thank you to the staff who helped us out when the handle of my mother's wheelchair broke. They managed to fix it so it was usable again. However, the park is not very wheelchair friendly.
Only real grumble was the rather surly woman on reception. A smile and a friendly hello on arrival is not too much to ask.

Thank Ed R

Just 10 minutes out of Greymouth you'll find the Heritage Park Village Shanty Town depicting the a West Coast town as it was in a bygone era. Great displays of those days, excellent train ride then take the walk down into the village visiting all the local businesses as they were. Once completed have a coffee or dine in Village Cafe. What a neat place to visit we certainly enjoyed this attraction and would recommend it.

This is the second time we have been here, the last a few years ago. The area is great to explore and we easily filled a half day with panning, walking and viewing the buildings. Well worth a visit if you are on the coast and a great family activity.

Following our Lonely Planet‘s recommendation, we visited Shantytown on our way to Franz Josef. Entry isn’t expensive, 33NZD per adult and gives you the option to get an excellent hands-on view of how life during the gold rush must have been. Comparing with a lot of museums or similar heritage sites, you can actually go into all the houses and don’t have to look through glazed entrance doors. Overall a very nice visit! But note, do not expect a theme park!!!
