“Inexpensive, basic accommodation”
Reviewed 30 December 2010

We stayed in this Lodge one night in December on a trip around the South Island.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and as inexpensive and basic accommodation, it was fine for one night.

The room I was in was reasonably clean, although I felt that the bunk could have had a wipe down. The toilet was not conveniently located, as I had to walk through a downstairs living area to get to it. As it is located on the main road, you can sometimes hear heavy vechile traffic, but this didn't bother me.

The place appeared clean and tidy but my bed was riddled with BED BUGS. so much so i have over 50 bites on one arm alone. I was in a twin room so moved to the other bed as i couldnt find the duty manager. i didnt pay for the room but it has cost me as much in creams and antihistamines. i have backpacked round NZ and come across the odd one but this was just ridiculous.

Lyellcreeklodge, Manager at Lyell Creek Lodge, responded to this review, 2 September 2010
We can not work out the reason for this review, we pride our selves on being a cozy clean Lodge and have NEVER had a problem with bed bugs. Since this review we have fully renovated the inside of our lodge including new carpet, curtains, beds, kitchens and of course paint. We welcome a full inspection to every guest before they decide to stay as well. It is hard to keep every one happy, and I guess this customer was one of the very few - its a shame because this sort of response can be damaging.

Lyell Creek Lodge is a short drive from town and the whale watching tour. We only stayed one night so spent limited time at the hostel but I found it to be clean and comfortable. We were offered a cheaper rate due to some renovations being done which meant we did not get ensuite rooms as requested. This was no problem as the shared bathrooms were very clean and there were no long waits.

The double bedroom was spacious with a built-in wardrobe, bedside table, lamps, heater, and small TV. The bed was comfy and warm. And the view - wow!

The kitchen/lounge area has a nice fire and full facilities. Everything is very clean.

I would recommend this to backpackers and anyone wishing to save money on accommodation.

My wife and stayed at Lyell Creek Lodge for 2 nights during our visit to Kaikoura and loved it. The rooms and facilities were spotless and appreciated the extra little touches, such as the Minties (sweets) on the pillows. Jonny the manger was very friendly and accommodating and did everything he could to help throughout our stay. There was a kitchen area downstairs and another kitchen and living area upstairs, that had a fire and plenty of DVDs to watch when we had done enough sightseeing for the day (like being at home). Coffee, tea, milk etc was all provided and there were also laundry and internet facilities, everything was there you needed for a pleasant stay. In between looking after us at Lyell Creek, Jonny also ran ‘Fish Kaikoura’ and we were lucky enough to spend a morning out in his boat fishing and pulled up a few crayfish pots, which we had for dinner that night, beautiful. We would not hesitate to recommend Lyell Creek Lodge and Fish Kaikoura to anyone visiting Kaikoura.

On the upside, the staff were really nice and friendly and it seemed safe enough. And the kitchen facilities were also good.
These aside, this place was one of the worst I have stayed in and I have travelled a lot. My husband and I stayed here to reduce travel costs, but I guess you get what you pay for! It was extremely loud all night and you could hear everything: toilets flushing, taps dripping, everything! The place was poorly designed with the communal lounge on the top floor, which was directly above our room, and we hardly got a wink of sleep.
The bedding in the room was clean yet very old and worn
and the carpets had stains on them. It's a shame that the nice staff and great views couldnt make up for all of these things. This hostel could definitely use a revamp.

  • Liked — Staff service and views of the mountains
  • Disliked — The noise and the linen!

My boyfriend and I just left Kaikoura after staying at Lyell Creek Lodge for 2 nights in a beautiful double room with views of the amazing snow capped mountains out of a great picture window and views of the sea out of the other window! There doesn't seem to be many reviews on the internet about the hostel so we thought we'd let you know just how great it is! We had a really friendly welcome from Sarah and she gave us loads of useful information and tips - she told us all about the best ways to get to the beautiful walks in the area. The hostel itself was lovely - really clean and tidy and well maintained in fact we thought it was more like serviced apartments thanyour traditional backpackers. There are 2 great kitchens and a lovely lounge upstairs with a log fire. It has a cute garden at the back with a little stream with the occasional duck! And beyond that is just views of farmland with horses and mountains. This place is a little Gem! There are no dorm rooms here, just double rooms and twin rooms but that kind of adds to the quiet and nice feel to the place. If you are in Kaikoura (which in itself is a place not to be missed) give this place a try! Enjoy your travels!
