Went on a Saturday night for Night time Sledding, truely one of the most exhilarating experience for this well traced Family from Australia. Scary, fun with Crazy Slovenians. What an amazing atmosphere. I can’t wait to see the place at Day time,

We visited Velika Planina in the beginning of November when the temperatures were still moderate. The cable car takes you up the mountain, from where you can start walking, or you take the gondola to the very top and start exploring from there. You have many paths to choose from. The scenery is amazing, there are wooden huts, the shepherds used to live in and they look like a scene from a movie. On a sunny day, you will receive a gorgeous view. There are also mountain cottages with food and drinks.

Dear Mateja. water is not drinkable anywhere on Velika planina, because it's rain. It's also very rare, especially in summer.

This jewel of Kamnik-Savinja Alps saves up the best of itself for autumn (especially October) when you can admire all of the autumn leaf colors everywhere (combined with special traditional wood houses on this jaunt it is simply awesome). Because the most of tourists come here in summer and the shepherd's season is over till the end of September, you can have nearly all the plateau for yourself in autumn. Before you go there, check timetables of cable car and chair lift rides on the Velika Planina official website (on October chair lift does not operate and cable car rides only on specific hours, the same hours up and down). Cable car ride starts in the area of Kamniška Bistrica (north of Kamnik and Domžale, you can also easily reach the spot from Ljubljana for a day trip). Chair lift starts right after the end of cable car ride and takes you to the top of Gradišče (the highest point on the Big Pasture Plateau) and you can go down to the tourist settlement, shepherd's settlement and some mountain cottages where traditional local food is served. If you take a cable car ride and don't take chair lift, it is around 30 minutes walk upwards from the end of cable car ride to the tourist settlement. I needed approximately 4 hours to explore all places there (although chair lift was not operating, with that additional it would be approximately 1 hour less) but you can hike on many different paths on the pasture for a whole day if you want (and be there for more days if you rent a house there). I recommend hiking shoes - paths can be dangerous downwards with inappropriate footwear because of many slippery little stones.

Architecture of wood houses in shepherd's and tourist settlements is special on this area (you can not see the same architecture anywhere else). There are many picturesque and imposing views to all the highest mountain in Kamnik-Savinja Alps (Grintovec, Skuta, Brana, Planjava, Ojstrica etc.) and their rocky walls. Because these Alps are part of the Southern Limestone Alps and are made of limestone (calcium carbonate), you can see some caves, sinkholes and other karst phenomena - Velika Planina is a typical example of high-alpine karst plateau. In summer you can see many pasture animals and shepherds wear traditional 19th century clothing. Therefore, it is much to be seen on the Velika Planina and this place is surely a great choice if you go somewhere for a trip in Slovenia. Enjoy time here, you surely won't regret visiting this sight.

Best way to spend a day during all seasons. Great views, traditional wooden shepherds mountain huts, cows, nature. Great walk, suitable for children. Can be visited with a cable car (take a road towards Kamniška bistrica) or with a car from parking from another side (1 hour walk), take a road towards Črnivec/Gornji grad from Kamnik and turn towards Podvolovjek
