If you love your pastries stuffed full of savoury delights and your bread crusty, and/or soft and unctuous with oil and nuts, this is the Cerdanyan bakery for you. We were so busy with the delicious walnut bread and the creamy tuna pastries, we left no space for their legendary madeleines. There is always next time; we'll be back!

Feast your eyes and your bellies with this bread shop in the tiny village of Martinet, between Barcelona and Andorra. Well worth a detour!

Everything is laid out so all you have to do is point - try the walnut bread, the madalenas, the chocolate bread and one of the host of "cocas".

If, like me, you are luck enough to visit this place once or twice a year, there is always something new to try, like their organic spelt rolls or their flavoured breads.

Mornings are best because things run out quickly.

Oh, forgot to mention the huge loaves of bread tasting as only a wood-fired oven can make them taste!

All I can say is top marks!

BAKERY Forn d'en Jordi

Just spent two weeks in the Catalan Cerdanya and made our usual pilgrimage to this fantastic bakery.

The walnut bread is as good as ever, fresh out of the oven, a few days old or toasted.

But I want to comment specifically on the madalenas in this review. Someone earlier (in fact two people who said almost the same thing) said that the apple/peach madalenas had no taste. REALLY? YA THINK? What I think has happened is that these reviewers are so used to artificial flavours that they can no longer taste the real thing.

I had a peach madalena yesterday. It was luscious, creamy in texture and LACED WITH PEACH. The flavour is not "in your face" but peach shouldn't be.

Today, my husband has bought me another for our journey home to England. And a chocolate one. And their fantastic empanada de tonina and something else which will be a surprise (it's a long journey!). Plus walnut bread and madalenas for friends in France and the UK.

So, take your time. Sit by the river. Luxuriate in the textures and flavours. Enjoy!

I love this bakery (see previous review) because our friends all love the produce which is imaginative and authentic and because there is often something new there to try. Today it was a delicious leek and artichoke coca (bready savoury) with a creamy base - perfection!

But a warning if you come in high summer... For three days now we have been trying to buy madeleines for our younger visitors, but very little luck! This morning we were there at 09.00 but the chocolate ones had already gone and the plain ones disappeared whilst we were queuing. Fortunately we had some of the apple and crema (favourites of one of our guests) and some with pine nuts.

But we have learned our lesson and ordered a big batch for tomorrow!

Their number is +34 973 51 50 31. NB I think they only speak Catalan, Castilian and maybe a little French...

PS THIS IS NOT A RESTAURANT, BUT THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE A BAKERY CLASSIFICATION...
