Having visited Panama many times I can not think of a more beautiful spot than Buenaventura on the Pacific Coast. The Buenaventura Golf & Beach resort is the best way to enjoy this gorgeous beach. A Marriott Autograph Hotel that very much lives up to its reputation. We had a spacious suite that overlooked the pool with a balcony from which you could see the ocean in the distance. The service is first class. At the Faro pool we enjoyed the ocean breeze and the delicious Panamanian cuisine served to us by two very enthusiastic young men, Marcos and Emir. After spending a beautiful day in the sun it was a treat to relax at the luxurious and recently renovated Spa Corotu. Doralys and Casilda gave us a wonderful couples massage. In the evening we enjoyed a delicious dinner of corvina and lobster with flan for dessert. On our way to our room we stopped to take a photo of the Panamanian dancers dressed in the traditional pollera and montuno. It was the end of a perfect day in Buenaventura.

Gorgeous property but unfortunately our experience was tainted by fake laundry charges on our bill at check out. The hotel clerk at check out spoke broken English and my BF thought she said he was signing for his $300 deposit to be refunded. He received the bill after signing and noticed later that there was magically a $300.70 laundry charge that somehow used up the total security deposit at check in . Considering we arrived at 8 pm straight from our first day of traveling, there was no way we had any reason to do laundry upon check-in. Two emails to the hotel manager, once we were home, went unanswered. My bf then had to try to dispute the charge as fraudulent and cancel his credit card. He just had the dispute denied because he signed the bill agreeing to it, even though he didn’t realize what he was signing! Beyond that, the fake laundry charges were $257 plus taxes plus tip for 2 1/2 days there, outrageously high even if they had been real! We travel all over and have never had such an offensive experience, even by lesser hotels. Now we are trying to get the very high end reputable tour company we used to intervene because his CC company closed the dispute.
I find this to be absolutely outrageous and appalling and totally mistrust the hotel; we found similar reviews once we returned but I can’t find them now. Maybe they were deleted. I would NEVER stay there again or recommend them to anyone!

Definitely the best beach escape from Panama City. The hotel and the overall Buenaventura resort have been constantly improving and adding new facilities over the year. The golf course is first class and the cosy Asian restaurant is the best spot to finish a great day of R&R.
Breakfast buffet is amazing, especially the almond croissants and the coffee! Final recommendation: to avoid the only potential hassle consisting in the traffic on the way back to Panama City, try to leave after 8.30pm o the following Monday morning..

Stayed during Carnival week as it is one of the few quiet hotels on the Pacific Coast near the City of Panama, that is, within 2 hours away. The hotel itself, pool area and grounds are very nice – and relaxing. You won’t hear loud music like in the nearby all-inclusive resorts. However, for what you would normally pay, that is, USD 400 a night, it is not worth it, so it’s best to go when they have an offer.

Staff / Service:
Contrary to some reviews, the staff in general was very friendly, but they need to be better trained. In the pool area, for example, there was no waiter service. There were usually 2-3 employees at the pool bar but not once did they pass by to ask if we wished to order something to drink or eat – and the one day we got up to ask for a drink, they forgot to bring it.

Pool Area:
The lounge chairs need to have their cushion slipcovers replaced as they all have stains on them (they might wash them but it is not nice to see them like this) - plus the flapping curtains of the Pergolas were annoying; they need to come up with a better design for shade.

Rooms:
They are large and comfortable with a spacious bathroom and nice amenities, but they are starting to show signs of deterioration after 10 years of construction - and if you wish to read at night, the lighting is too dim. The balcony is also spacious and every room I've stayed in has had a lovely view.

During our entire stay, however, they forgot to place disposable coffee stirrers in the room after replacing the coffee capsules and tea – and fresh hand or facial towels were only available in the evening when housekeeping would pass by again.

Breakfast:
The buffet included in the rate is complete, with a nice variety of breads, sweet rolls, an omelette / waffle station, fresh fruits, cold cuts, cheese and a few hot, traditional dishes.

Nevertheless, I highly recommend they place sneez guards to protect the food from contamination and have someone supervise the cleanliness of the area occasionally as some serving spoons were on the food itself and some serving tongs were being used for different types of food. The floor, too, was dirty.

My rating of 4 stars is based on the fact that it is overall a beautiful resort , I’ve stayed several times here (when it is used to be the Bristol Hotel and JW Marriott), but after experiencing the above, I will look into a different option next time, unless they take measures to live up to the name and high standard of an AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION Luxury Hotel.

We booked thru sunwing and originally stayed at Riu ( don't go to Riu). When we were researching our options, we choose Riu because we were familiar with the brand ( being North America ) and it was cheaper than Buenoventura for our family of three ( not a huge difference tho ). I believe those of you looking at this review willost likely compare with Riu because there aren't much options out there in Rio Hato.

So we began our journey at the Riu and after our first night we decided we needed to switch or ask for a early flight home. That place was not 5 stars or anywhere near our expectations ( we wanted to stay at a luxury resort).

So back to Buenoventura, we ended up paying $400 cdn to be switched to this place during our third day there and it was worth every penny.

This property is very big, it's a combination of private villas and a single building of hotel rooms. We stayed at the hotel rooms.

The overall vibe of the resort is tranquil and very upscale. Due to the fact that majority of the resort occupants are in private villas, the common areas are quiet. This was a pro for us because they are always plenty of sunbeds to choose from and not a lot of people at the pool. The same goes for the restaurants because I am assuming most people cook in their villas, the restaurants we dined in were at most 40 percent occupancy.

They have one place for breakfast and it was buffet. The have just the right choices of options and everything was tasty and up to 5 star hotel standards. For lunch and dinner, all the options were a la carte and they have a lots of options and everything was good as well.

One thing to note is their all inclusive isn't actually all inclusive. I am not sure exactly how they so it but part of the patrons have the all inclusive plan and the rest only paid for hotel rooms and have to pay for food in all the restaurants. This was actually a pro for us because we were dining at restaurants where the bill could be up to $200 a night USD but our plan covered it ( you get an actual bill after every meal but you don't have to pay it). So how the all inclusive works is it cover majority of the menu and most drinks but you have to option to upgrade ( it will state on the menu if an food item is an upgrade) but regardless of the actual price of the single item, you only pay $10 USD if you choose to upgrade. So for example one night we ordered an Rib eye steak which was an upgrade option but we just paid $10, another night we had large lobster tail, seafood platter and same amount we paid for the upgrades. If you choose not to upgrade there are plenty of amazing options included in your plan.

I don't believe the hotel had much entertainment options, I am not too sure because we were not seeking that types of activities. They do have bars you can go and grab drinks after dinner If you like.

I would say majority of the patrons during our stay were not English speaking and we are fine with that. We are in Central America remember. If you are looking for a resort where you want to meet fellow candians or American to social then this is probably not the best place.

Overall this was a true 5 stars ( not like the Riu ), the facility was clean and modern with great atmosphere. The landscape was beautiful. You will feel a sense of peace and tranquility, never was crowded. The service was excellent. The pools and lounging area was very nice ( they have many cabanas you can hang out at, at no extra cost, and always available). The food was excellent. Sometimes you go to an all inclusive and the food could be really a hit and miss, not this one, especially because part of the patrons actually have to pay to eat there, they were REAL restaurants.

Lastly, if you are considering the Riu or this, I say the comparison is night and day.
