“Good value, great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2012

Although I don't normally stay in hostels, I recently had the pleasure of spending 3 nights at the Blue Mountain YHA while on an international marketing campaign for Destination New South Wales. Not only were the staff incredibly welcoming, but they also went out of their way to ensure that our stay was truly enjoyable. Thank you to everyone at YHA. If anyone is searching for a great location in Katoomba, with toasty warm rooms, private bathrooms, communal kitchen facilities and a social lounge area where friendly travelers enjoy hanging out... the Blue Mountains YHA delivers.

Stayed here recently and was really happy with the facilities. Heating and showers in ensuite rooms was excellent, just what you need after a long day checking out the wilderness. Communal area is great and the kitchen has loads of space and equipment. Highly recommended for young travellers wanting to get the best experience of the Blue Mountains.

We stayed at this hostel during an international press trip with Destination New South Wales for a global youth campaign. Overall, I couldn't have been happier with the service. The rooms were clean and modern, the facilities well cared for, and the atmosphere friendly and inviting. Definitely recommended.

Like I said, as a first hostel experience, this place is going to be hard to beat. I had a really positive vibe from all the staff and occupants. Room was great and clean. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!

Stayed 3 nights, warm rooms, nice showers, social area is pretty cool down stairs. Easy access to town facilities. Would rather stay here than a hotel.

We stayed only one night in a double ensuite and enjoyed it very much. This YHA is located in a beautiful historic building with a great atmosphere. The communal spaces are lovely. This YHA has a good location near the town centre and the Blue Mountains. The room was OK for a hostel, but the bedding was so thin that you could see through it.

To be honest, the rooms are a bit squalid... They're dark and not so clean, and they don't smell great.

BUT, what I loooooooove about this hostel, and what makes me take the train out of Sydney and go there for a break once in a while, is:

The amazing atmosphere.
The living room/ common room is really special. There's a fireplace, a reading room with bookshelves, a pool table, lots and lots of comfy beanbags and couches, rugs and carpets to make you feel really cosy. I go there before exam period to study, because it's so quiet and you're in the middle of such beautiful mountains.

The kitchen is great. Big and modern, and many fridges so you can shop on your first day and save on eating at restaurants.

The location is ok, it's under 10 minutes from the station by foot. Maybe 5mins if you walk fast. It's right next to Aldi and Coles, and opposite an amazing cafe called "Common Ground Cafe".

The bathrooms are ok... 6/10 or 7/10 depending on how busy the hostel is.

In summary, it's good for a short stay, if you'll be out most of the day hiking or whatever. But if you're a room-stayer then you probably won't feel so happy with it.
It's also VERY expensive for a youth hostel. Tip, book online and buy a 10-pack for YHA. Then you can use the other nights elsewhere and it averages out at about $15 a night.
