We stayed here as members of a large walking group, and the hotel's location in the Ourika valley, around two hours drive from Marrakech, is superb for access to the foothills of the Atlas.

The hotel is built on a hillside, with the bedrooms on several levels down the hill, away from the road. While this makes for wonderfully quiet rooms, it does mean that there is a fair amount of stair climbing involved with using the Amnougour, so best avoid it if you have any kind of mobility problems.

The terrace is also away from the road, with views down the valley and up to the mountains,so it's a great place to eat in warm weather. The hotel's cooking is quite good, which makes the Amnougour terrace a popular spot for lunch for coach trips from Marrakech.

Our room was adequate. The weather was cold so the hotel had provided electric heaters (of which, more later). We were a bit suspicious that the sheets were not entirely clean. The shower first discharged several litres of black sludge, then ran clean. The hotel said that they always do this if unused for any length of time. Shower water could have been hotter.

The main quirk in the hotel seems to be the electricity supply. While we were there the power went off several times, in different sections of the hotel. We guessed that the electric room heaters were tripping the fuses when our group got back from hiking and all turned our heaters on. Most of the staff were useless in sorting this problem out, and the hotel supplied candles, but no matches, as a pretty useless backup. Eventually two of our group located the fusebox, and re-set the fuses whenever they tripped.

Despite all the above I would recommend this place as a base for exploring the Ourika valley, provided that you get a good price. Take a torch with you, and don't get into your shower untill you have seen the water run clean for a minute or two..
