“Beautiful convenient safe setting, with everything you need for a comfy stay in the jungle...”
Reviewed March 14, 2018 for a stay in March 2018

Richard's directions are perfect, so that eliminates a lot of stress in getting there. The cottage is far enough from the "main road" to be quiet and not at all dusty (the main road is dusty for sure!). It is convenient to several nice beaches and the national park, and a tavern is only a mile or so away (which also has great food and live music on Fridays). The cottage is open and airy, and well equipped. The bugs are minimal...we never used bug dope. Richard is a king...very kind and gracious and helpful. We would go back anytime!!

“Tarzan boy”
Reviewed August 11, 2017 for a stay in July 2017

Jungle life
I'm far away from nowhere
On my own like Tarzan boy
Hide and seek
I play along while rushing 'cross the forest
Monkey business on a sunny afternoon
Jungle life
I'm living in the open
Native beat that carries on
Burning bright
A fire blows the signal to the sky
I sit and wonder, does the message get to you?

Jungle life
You're far away from nothing
It's all right
You won't miss home
Take a chance
Leave everything behind you
Come and join me, won't be sorry
It's easy to survive

“magical family vacation in Osa!”
Reviewed May 22, 2017 for a stay in May 2017

We rented this house together with the neighboring River House for a 10 day family vacation in Matapalo. With morning howlers and morpho butterflies, a sloth and spider monkeys on the trees right beside the porch, endless hiking trails and nearby beaches, this was a perfect jungle adventure for all of us, aged 8 to 84! Great vegan meals by Ashley, wonderful local knowledge and help with logistics from Richard and Angus-- thanks to all for a fantastic trip!

“Unforgettable Jungle Immersion”
Reviewed May 2, 2017 for a stay in April 2017

The key to a great stay at Casa Amplatoa is remembering that you are a visitor in the jungle wild. It is the key and the joy.

For ten days in April 2017, we were privileged to rest in the closest thing to Eden we can imagine. From the couch, we saw and heard squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, rainbow-feathered scarlet macaws, toucans, hopping agoutis, coatis, lizards, geckos, large toads, shimmering blue morpho butterflies, halloween crabs, and more. There were new wildlife discoveries every day.

White pineapples, limes, and starfruit grew nearby. Richard, the knowledgeable and helpful caretaker, graciously allowed us to eat a fresh pineapple and plant a new sprout.

There was a hammock for an afternoon nap. Dan often woke to the sound of monkeys rustling in the trees.

We walked along a river in the dense rainforest to a swimming hole at the base of a waterfall. Along the way, we saw colorful dart frogs and crayfish and also howler monkeys climbing high overhead. We went to the beach, Playa Pan Dulce, about ten minutes walk from the house. We enjoyed the warm salt water, like a bath, and watching the pelicans and people fish in the strong waves. There were numerous other beaches nearby as well.

We didn’t use bug repellant; it wasn’t necessary when we were there. Flashlights are necessary at night to avoid surprises with nighttime jungle dwellers. It is their home.

To get there, we flew with Nature Air from San José to Puerto Jiménez and rented a car to drive 45 minutes of rattly dirt road to Casa Amplatoa. There were two points where we drove through a river, but it was not difficult, perhaps this was because it was the dry season. We didn’t encounter anything unmanageable.

We purchased groceries at the Supermercado BM in Puerto Jiménez. People there (and everywhere) were friendly and helpful. The store had everything I could imagine anyone needing and appeared to be open every day, including holidays. We didn’t have any difficulty finding our way around. There are some great art stores in Puerto Jiménez as well.

Having a vehicle gave us some flexibility, but if you prefer not to drive, that would work well while staying at Casa Amplatoa. You’d just need to arrange a way to and from Puerto Jiménez. The beach, the waterfall, and Martina’s Buena Esperanza — a restaurant/bar open most days — are all a short walk away. We went to Martina’s for the Friday night art fair, which was a great way to meet locals and learn about what they are making. Plan ahead to have money in the local currency, colones, for Martina’s and the art vendors as credit cards are not accepted.

We didn't feel the need to have a guided tour of the Corcovado National Park because staying at Casa Amplatoa is like getting to live right inside a nature park. However, the guides we happened to meet were friendly, professional and knowledgeable locals skilled at jungle safety and helping visitors see wildlife they might be walking right under.

Richard, the caretaker for Casa Amplatoa, was extremely helpful, clear, kind and friendly. He was available, but also gave us space. We enjoyed meeting him.

If the idea of living stress-free while immersed in the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and feel of the jungle is appealing to you, I highly recommend staying at Casa Amplatoa. It is beautifully designed, simple, clean and comfortable. Given the opportunity, we would go back.

“The land that time forgot”
Reviewed April 5, 2017 for a stay in March 2017

We didn't really know what to expect before arriving in The Osa Peninsula which made the experience all the more inspiring.

Arriving in a tiny twin prop plane landing on a sliver of land in Puerto Jimenez was a great start to the adventure. We were greeted by Antonio, the house transport dude and driven by 4x4 to the house over rough roads and rivers in to the jungle.
The house is in a perfect location, just off the dirt road, in a clearing surrounded by jungle. We could just hang out at the house and watch an array of animals go about their daily business, amazing !

Richard the all round do it all guy at the house looked after us super well and made our stay one to remember, he was brilliant.
The house itself was ideal, comfortable, clean and had everything we needed.

To summarise, this place is off the charts, it has to be seen and experienced, words just don't do it justice! It truly feels like this is how the planet was 1000 years ago, a truly magical place and one where all of us in our group have promised we will return

“Incredible, amazing...HEAVEN”

Having visited over 100 different countries, predominantly for nature, I can honestly say this has to be the best ever. Walking up the stream waist height in clear water, watching the shimmering blue of the giant morph butterflies and ending up at a swimming hole next to a waterfall.
Richard the Manager was brilliant with all his advice, philosophy on life and was around if needed, but left you alone where you felt the peaceful solitude of this magical place.
Lying in your hammock or on the day bed the nature you see is amazing.
Walking to your private beach at Pan Dulce, you see even more nature on a 10 minute walk.
I was worried about writing this review, as words cannot do it justice.
Just go here, and you will come back mesmerized

“The perfect antidote to the rat-race...”
Reviewed March 23, 2016 for a stay in February 2015

I love living in NYC but when I travel I prefer to do something TOTALLY different. The Osa is perfect escape, remote and beautiful with many things to do and see. The people are amazing, friendly and happy, always a smile on their faces. Chris and Claire have created the perfect oasis with easy access to surf, yoga, waterfall hikes and sight-seeing. They can give you great recommendations for things to do while you are there. I look forward to going back to see the new structure just finished last year.
