“Disappointing Stay”
Reviewed June 29, 2022 for a stay in June 2022

Pros: On arriving at the lodge, the scenery is beautiful, and a beautiful setting. The lodge itself is lovely, an upside down lodge, with bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs, which in the very hot weather we had, was a welcome relief as they were cooler. Dick (the owner) was there when we arrived, went through key safe and a couple of other things.

Cons: Upstairs, the main living/dining area became unbearable in the heat, we were advised to keep windows, doors shut, and blinds closed to keep the area cool. With the heatwave we had this did not work, nor opening doors, windows or blinds, did any good. Maybe some fans could be provided. On arrival, we noticed that the kitchen units, which were high gloss, were quite dirty, there were streaks, runs, greasy marks, all down the front of the units, we spent the first hour or so, cleaning these down, spraying, cleaning and drying off. We didn’t do all of the units, just the main ones. We were told, quite rudely, when we were leaving, the units had been sprayed because of COVID. There were food items left in the fridge and freezer, which should have been cleared.

Downstairs, the beds were awful, cheap metal framed beds, which creaked and made a noise everytime you moved, pillows and mattresses were extremely hard and uncomfortable, not good for a good nights sleep. Single quilts on double beds. The bedroom windows were next to the drive to the main house, and their car was parked right outside the windows, so on a night when we were in bed, when they came back in, all you could here was the car doors slamming, laughing giggling and talking when they got out of the car. In their description and rules it states that any rowdy or noisy parties are not allowed, maybe they need to follow their own advice as they seemed to make no effort to be quiet, even though they had guests at the lodge. This also prevented us from opening the bedroom windows. Rubbish left in the bathroom bin, so had not been emptied. The fans in the bathrooms were full of dust. The shaver socket could not be used without switching on the illuminated mirror, so in order to charge an electric toothbrush , the mirror light needed to be switched on and kept on. It was such a shame about all of the problems, because the lodge itself was in such a gorgeous setting. We did leave a day earlier than expected.

We are inspected by Visit England who give us a 4 Star Gold Rating and gave us the Rose award for service excellence in 2019 which is awarded to only a few establishments across the country and can only be won once. Nothing has changed and the Lodge is prepared to the same standard every time.
We do our utmost to address any problems and make sure our guests have a lovely stay at Cuckoo Ban Lodge. I am so sorry that Michael Steel and his party were unsatisfied and chose to give us a such a critical review after they left. We have had so many lovely guests who have left us wonderful reviews over the last 8 years, and this is the first bad review.
It was a very hot week, which they clearly did not enjoy. We would have been very happy to supply fans if we had been asked. There is also a shaded veranda with lovely views to enjoy and great place to eat in the cool of the evening and is enjoyed by most of our guests. Why shut yourselves inside when there is so much to see and do in beautiful Rutland? I do advise guests to close the curtains when they are out on hot days in accordance with Which advice. The bedrooms are cool in summer and cosy in winter. The living room enjoys lovely southerly views over tree lined meadows through glass doors which open onto your own private sunny veranda.
I am not sure how our quiet dinner party with old friends became the rowdy party in the review, but we did give Michael Child a full refund for that evening when he complained that his very early night had been disturbed, though they would have had much more disturbance on many of the local sites with several lodges and people enjoying themselves. Perhaps it was the contrast with the quiet of our valley most evenings,
The Lodge is cleaned properly and in accordance with Covid 19 cleaning guidance the surfaces are sprayed with disinfectant and left hence the smearing on the surfaces. The welcome pack is left in the fridge and on this occasion unopened items left by the previous guests were left in the fridge as we thought the incoming guest would enjoy them. We will not do it again!
The beds are good quality metal framed beds which enables us to clean properly underneath and as is the practice in many good hotels we join two single beds together to make a double and we supply two single quilts in common with continental practice. All consistent with our Visit England Four Star Gold rating.
Thank you to all our wonderful guests who love Cuckoo Barn Lodge and give us great reviews.

“What a beautiful place with fantastic hosts”
Reviewed January 19, 2022 for a stay in December 2021

My family and I spent Christmas at Cuckoo Barn Lodge. As soon as I walked through the door, I was utterly wowed. It was beautifully and tastefully decorated and ready for Christmas.

They had literally thought of everything you could possibly need and much more. We felt extremely comfortable and had such a lovely welcoming from Dick and Rosie.

My dog also had a fantastic time and if he could speak, he'd ask me to go and buy him a wood burner, as he loved laying right by it and falling asleep.

I've stayed in many places, but nothing compares to how truly special Cuckoo Barn Lodge is.

We'll be back in the summer.

Thank you for having us! :-)

“Burghley Horse Trials and more!”
Reviewed March 20, 2018 for a stay in September 2017

It is testament to how wonderful Cukoo Barn Lodge is, that we keep coming back year after year. We have made it our holiday home for the last 3 years now and can only see that continuing for the next few years. We initially stayed for a week so that we could attend Burghley Horse Trials but have extended our stay for two weeks to enjoy more of the surrounding area. Dick and Rosie are brilliant hosts and can't do enough for you. they are on hand to deal with any issues that arise. The accommodation is luxurious and meets all of our needs, with a lovely garden and decking area and plenty of space in the open plan living/kitchen area. We love taking our family dogs to the lodge so that they can enjoy the outdoors too and they are welcomed just as much as we are. Since our first visit we have added to our group and our little boy loves it just as much as we do and his needs are also catered for.

Ideally situated close to Stamford, Oakham and Rutland Water, there are numorous walks and activities to do for young and old alike.

We can't recommend staying here enough and look forward to returning in September 2018!

“Perfect in every way”
Reviewed December 31, 2017 for a stay in December 2017

Cuckoo Barn Lodge is ideally located not far from Rutland Water amidst beautiful countryside. It is very peaceful and an ideal place to unwind and relax. There are plenty of country walks and while in the heart of the country the towns of Oakham and Stamford are only a short drive away as are a number of excellent country pubs and restaurants. This really is a luxury lodge and the owners have gone out of their way to ensure that you have everything you may need to make your stay perfect. Despite being in the middle of winter, the underfloor heating and log burner kept us cosy and warm. We had to change our plans at the last minute and were not able to travel until very late on Christmas Day arriving at just before midnight. The owners were very accommodating and concerned that we had everything we needed on arrival. There was even a Christmas Tree and presents for the children. We would definitely come again.

“Family weekend”
Reviewed June 13, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

Our party of 6 which included a baby, a toddler, parents, auntie and grandparents all thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at Cuckoo Barn Lodge. The property was well equipped, warm and cosy and there was loads of space both inside and outside. We had access to lovely walks on the doorstep and Rutland Water was just a short drive away. Our hosts were charming and were available to advise on activities when needed. We're looking forward to visiting later in the year when we can enjoy relaxing on the patio.
