“Perfect location, fabulous service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2011

We only paid for a double room, but somehow ended up in a large room on the top floor with three beds and a great view of St. Nicholas cathedral and the charming buildings round about. The room was clean and pleasant, no AC but lots and lots of windows for fresh air.

We drove in and found out that driving in Prague right now is not at all a good idea. Because of construction, there is some really crazy rerouting of traffic going on that brings ALL traffic trying to go through Old Town on the East side of the river over to the West side, and right in front of the hotel before going back to the other side of the river. After sitting in traffic for a lifetime to actually get there, we were just ready to veg at the hotel, but there was no parking (which was expected- we had been planning to drop off our luggage, park across the river, and walk back...or something).

Instead, the incredibly kind manager (? or some sort of employee? I'm not totally sure what his function was, but he was fabulous) hopped in his car (after checking us in), led us to the nearest garage (under the Rudolfinum), somehow fit our massive luggage into his car, and drove us back to the hotel, then carried our (still massive) suitcases up several flights of stairs to our room (no elevator). And then he refused a tip. What?!

The next morning, he repeated the entire thing in reverse (alas, our itinerary only allowed us one night in Prague), and again refused to accept any tips.

Oh, and did I mention the location? It could not be better- about halfway between the castle and the bridge, all the old-towny type sites are within an easy (not to mention unbelievably beautiful- there's something wonderful around every corner!) walk.

I would have given a very positive review even without the truly wonderful and considerate service we received, but that was what boosted it into a really memorable stay.

I will definitely be back to Prague someday soon, and when I return, I definitely plan on staying at the Hotel u Schnellu.

(we didn't have dinner in the restaurant, but the breakfast was great!)

We only went to the restaurant at this location for a mid-day snack. The coffee and dessert was delicious and the service was great. I would return to it and recommend it!

On my visit to Prague last month, this was the best restaurant I found for Czech Cuisine. They offer potato pancakes (Which I highly recommend) as a side to their goulash rather than just the ubiquitous dumplings. Ordering was easy because their menu is in several languages, including Czech, English, and German. I also highly recommend the daily cake selection - the first night I was there it was a decadent chocolate selection with a ganache frosting - yummy. Very good prices. I had a beer, the goulash and potato pancakes, after dinner coffee and the aforementioned desert, all for @ 325 K Czech. Located near Wallenstein Gardens. I did not stay at the hotel, so I cannot comment on that, but i liked the restaurant so well I returned there for the potato pancakes (and some delicious onion soup) on my last night in Prague.

Walkable distance to the metro station, if not take a tram for one or two stop (cant remember exactly) and I'm literally at the doorstep. Easy walk to the bridge which will be useful for photo takings during dawn (it's mesmerizing even though I was freezing.)

Room size is just adequate for 2, bathroom is clean and heater is good, warms up the room fast. Recommended for basic needs.

Restaurant at the hotel serves good food, I wasn't given any extra discount though. In fact, I had dinner and lunch on separate occasion, the first bill was without service charged and we tipped as we pleased (over 10%), the second time a 15% tip was punched on a calculator and presented to us with the bill. We paid cash on both occasion. Even though it's not much money, it doesn't feel good.

We stayed 2 nights and we felt very confortable. The hotel was very clean and the stuff very nice. The breakfast was consistent and we specially enjoy the bar in wich we found a very nice atmosphere in the evenings.

We've been to Prague several times and always stayed in a different hotel. This visit was with friends and earlier in the year than we had been before. The temperature during the day hovered around freezing but there was a windchill of minus 8 and the night time temperature was minus 9 most nights!! Even with temperatures this low U Schnellu was always warm inside with the bedrooms getting too warm during the night. Our rooms overlooked Tomasska but with the double glazing we couldn't hear the traffic at all. The bedroom area was very spacious with a small table, two armed chairs and a desk, but there could have been more space in the bathroom. The bath almost came to a point at the end with the taps and shower fitting and when you showered the water splashed over the side onto the tiled floor. But on the plus side everything worked.
My only complaint was that when we checked in we were expecting to have to pay for our stay and was most surprised when the young lady on reception just showed us to our rooms with no mention of paying. Later that evening, when we had retired to bed and left our friends finishing drinks, our friends were approached and asked to pay for the rooms!! They were also asked if they would wake us and ask us to pay also!! Our friends stated that they would settle their account but that they would not wake us and the hotel would need to ask us the next morning at breakfast to settle our bill. The time was approximately 11.00pm!! I offered to pay the next morning and was told there was no-one available to take our money could we wait or come back later. We eventually settled our bill at 7:00pm the next evening!! I think this was a misunderstanding between the young staff and the hotel managment and didn't spoil our break. The weather, apart from being extremely cold, was bright sunlight for the 4 days were were there and on the morning we left it was snowing. We would stay at U Schnellu again as the location is fantastic, tucked away on the Castle side of the river but within easy walking of Old Town Square over Charles Bridge and with a metro stop just down the road. The food is good too even if you do get a mug of hot water and a fruit teabag if you ask for tea at breakfast! But that is all part of the culture, after all if everything was the same as it is at home what would be the point of visiting another country!!
