The museum consists of merely three rooms (not counting special exhibits), but I was surprised by the high quality the paintings. They are mostly from the 19th century romantic realism. A really broad spectrum of Polish painters is represented, with most of the major artists of the time. What a great museum for such a small city. I was surprised and really impressed. A nice little gem of a museum.

This is a small museum with a collection of well-executed but hardly awe-inspiring paintings (although there are one or two exceptional gems). Nonetheless, it's worth a visit due to its central location and the reasonable admission price, not to mention the relative dearth of museums in Białystok.

situated in the middle of the largest square in Bialystok, the Podlachia Museum is located in the former "town hall". Actually this building never used to be a city hall, but a commercial building built in the 18th Century for the towns' Jews to develop trade. It was extended with several side aisles which housed about 100 different Jewish sellers and shops. The actual building was destroyed under Communist times, and later rebuilt according to the original plans. The Museum of the region of Podlachia has several other branches, but this particular one has an exhibit of Polish paintings and temporary exhibits. Unfortunately, nothing about Jewish history !

The provincial museum in Bialystok is not the must see. There are some interesting exhibitions (both permanent and temporary). If you are in around you can easily enjoy other attractions of charming Białystok
