Owner description: Established by the Nazis in 1940, Auschwitz-Birkenau has become a symbol of terror, genocide and the Holocaust. Although the exact number of victims is unknown, many Jews, Poles and gypsies died here. The museum consists of two parts: Auschwitz I, the first and oldest camp (the number of prisoners fluctuated around 15,000, sometimes rising above 20,000) and Auschwitz II, Birkenau (which held more than 90,000 prisoners in 1944). The greater part of the apparatus of mass extermination was built in Birkenau and the majority of the victims were murdered there.

Words and pictures cannot put into context this place. A must see if you are visiting Poland. We had a guided tour and she was extremely knowledgeable and approachable. We felt it was worth paying for the tour as we were able to ask questions as we were going around. There is lots of walking and the ground was uneven in places. I'd recommend wearing sturdy shoes

When visiting Poland, we felt compelled to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau to learn more about the tragedies the Jews and others faced at the hands of the Nazi's during WWII. It is a very moving experience. I would strongly recommend anyone that has the opportunity to visit to do so. If for no other reason, than to learn more of the holocaust and to pay respect for those that suffered or died.

An emotional memorial to the many people that were brutally murdered for an ideal.
A dreadful stain on humanity that we have still not learned the lessons of history.
It is important to remember that there were also many millions of non-Jews that were slaughtered for the Nazi ideal and Auschwitz makes that very clear.
What struck us was the fact that there are actually three camps at Auschwitz and that the whole area commandeered was over 40 square kilometres.
A guided tour of Auschwitz I is a good idea for you to see the Blocks in turn and learn more of their history but then you should allow more time to walk around at a slower pace to better absorb the enormity of what happened there. We spent four hours here but felt that we could have stayed longer.
You should aim to get there as early in the day as possible, as it gets very busy with visitors by late morning.
Auschwitz II - Birkenau is over 1km away from Auschwitz I and has the iconic railway approach seen in many representations of the camp. The area is VAST and will take 2/3 hours to walk around. Chllingly stark, it also houses the remains of the infamous crematoria.
Very emotional but a very important memorial.
Sad that some visitors consider the taking of "selfies" to be appropriate in a place like this.
