my fault, hadn't read the reviews. it was a one-night stop over (thank goodness) but what a night! arrived half five in the afternoon and had been travelling all day. the room was big with previous comments about the beds being true, rock solid. got a a couple of hours sleep even though it was noisy. woke up about eight to what sounded like a party, shouting, music, dorrs banging. there were signs around the hotel which appear to suggest this 'hotel' has links to varous student organisations. fantastic. this night they had ukranian students visiting. decided to leave it til about ten pm to give them a fair run and to quieten down. at half ten rang reception, from my mobile, no phones in the rooms. was told by the young man on reception he would come and talk to the students.
the noise continued until 3 am. our group was getting up at 5 as we had to drive 18 hours.
when we checked out the receptionist stated that he had checked the hotel and couldn't hear any noise at all. worse than useless! apparently there is a nice hotel over the road, ruczaj, will try there next time.....

As of the many previous reviews of this hotel they are all more or less correct. We had to change rooms 3 times before we got a clean one.The guy on the reception peter was very helpful. There was no noise from other guests but I supose thats pot luck who is staying there. The breakfeast was excellant typical polish,,Very handy for 24hour tesco and the tram stop.Overall you get what you pay for,,,

Hotel Start is a very basic "hotel". Beds were like planks of wood nailed together with a mattress slung on top. Bed linen was not changed for the whole of our stay and on inspecting the underneath sheet there were hairs from previous occupants! No facilities for tea/coffee making provided in rooms. No hairdryer - unless you ask for one at reception. Our first night there we decided to eat in the restaurant - that was the one and only time we did as the meals were not very appetising. On the plus side - reception staff were always very helpful and polite. The hotel itself is a 20 minute tram journey from the centre of Krakow and is very close to the main road, which is never quiet so don't expect to get a good nights sleep if your room is at the front of the hotel.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and got 1 quiet night. There were groups of young kids staying and getting drunk in their rooms. We had to get the security two nights to close them down at 2.30 by threatening to call the police.

The breakfast was very greasy eggs and cold sausages but the rest bread, meats, salads, cereal was quite good.

The WiFi did not work in the rooms and required either sitting in the hallway or going downstairs to the reception and being eaten alive by the mosquitoes.

The transport to the city is reasonable with trams every 15 minutes or so and the Tescoes next door is good for food. It even has a few takeaway shops as well.

We stayed at The Start Hotel for 3 nights in May 2010 and found this Hotel to be clean, quiet location but excellent for public transport into the centre of Krakow, very friendly staff and good sized room. On arrival the hotel looks pretty awful outside however the room was clean, beds made every day and fresh towels daily. There is no safety desposit boxes in the room, these are at the reception, we didnt use a deposit box and nothing was taken from our rooms by the cleaners, who we think live in the hotel as well so they are very friendly and leave your things where they are. The man on reception was more than helpful and advised us which trams/buses to get which are located right outside the hotel. Also conveniently located next door is a 24 hour Tesco that is HUGE!! Its in a shopping centre so there are some cheap places to grab a snack, if you dont enjoy the breakfast like me!! The breakfast was a buffet of Polish cuisine, i didnt like this but my partner ate the different breads and cheeses whilst i drank the coffee! The only draw back for this hotel was that there was no hot drink facilities in your room, but this is nothing major. The tram stop is located outside the hotel and you can get all 3 trams into the city centre which is less than 10 minutes away, (trams 18,19 and 20), we never got the bus as the trams are every 10 mins or less and we didnt pay once! We would also advise you use Krakow Shuttle, (www.krakowshuttle.com i think) we used them for our taxi from the airport (prebooked but paid on arrival) for 70pl (other taxi's cost around 80pl) and we booked a tour of Auschwitz and Birkenau, and the salt mine all in one day, so they gave us our return taxi to the airport for free. They couldnt be more helpful and had really friendly drivers. All in all we enjoyed our time at Hotel Start, you get what you pay for, we wanted a budget hotel with easy access into the centre and Hotel Start provided us with this.
