This was our second visit to lake Bled. I strongly recommend staying in a hotel by the shore of the lake (like Grand Hotel Toplice). Rooms were somewhat dated but in a beautiful historic building. Everything in our room was clean, though floors were a little creaky, which didn't bother us. This hotel had airconditioning which was so very welcome as it was unexpectedly hot at the hight of summer.

In this hotel you also have access to a private swimming area by the lake with sunloungers on a decking and towels available by the shore. A swim in the lake was refreshing on a hot day. (Though, with my Finnish heritage I am sure I would have enjoyed a swim even in a colder season..)

A relaxed walk around the lake is a must (if disabled or with little kids I'd recommend taking the mini train at least some way around). This is a most scenic lake with a fairy tale looking castle on a tiny island in the middle of the lake. We aren't exactly the sporty types so believe me, you can walk around the lake in an hour or two and stop by for refreshments along the way.

Nearby there are also waterfalls and other beautiful natural locations to visit.

We stayed at the GHT for 3 nights in March 2012.

On arrival, we were upgraded to a Lake View Junior Suite, which the concierge assured us was a very nice room. I knew from TripAdvisor reviews and photos that the hotel is dated in style - I would say that the photos on this forum are fairly representative. Our room had a double bedroom, sitting room, large balcony and decent-sized bathroom, but everything had the air of an old-folks home about it.

So I wouldn't come here if you are expecting anything modern or glamorous but I would definitely stay here for the VIEW. The view is out of this world. The lobby, bar and breakfast room and spa all have enormous windows looking directly out at the lake with its fairytale castle and island. The spa is very very relaxing with a (cold!) springwater pool, a variety of saunas and friendly crew of massage therapists and beauticians.

The staff at the hotel are extremely helpful and responsive, especially the wonderful smiling and friendly barman.

I would LOVE to get my hands on this place and give it a makeover. With updated decor and a few mod cons, it could be one of the best hotels in Europe.

Room Tip: 409 is a nice sized room with a balcony and great lake views.

This hotel is located in one of the most beautiful places in South Central Europe. A front lake property, with a breathanking view of the Alps, century old churches and the famous Medieval Castle of Bled, this property has a classic and authentic decoration and furnitures from the 40's/50's . Some things are deteriorating and shoul be better maintained, but the place has been visited by the Prince Charles, Madelein Albright, Donald Trump and other moguls and jet setters. Ideal place for a quiet and romatic honney moon. In winter is very cold, but in summer this is the palce to be. Boating and water activities available, as well as an excelent spa with a massage parlor. Food is above average, but not top.

A delightful find in Bled. Located right on the lake -- you can enjoy it while reading a book in your room, enjoying a glass of wine or cafe at the resturant or walking out the back door and following the lake path.

Walking into the Grand Hotel reminds me of walking into the Chateau Montebello, or equivalent grand hotel from the turn of the 20th century. The rooms are surprisingly spacious, with a comfortable bed, comfortable and pillow (how often is at least one of those elements missing?).

The hotel is spotlessly clean, has a great attention to detail. I would recommend it for business travellers or family travelers. The only caveat on the last point is that the hotel restaurante is rather expensive, so you'd be dining mostly in town. The rooms are large, with hardwood floors, lots of hangers, floor space and current bathroom.

Location wise -- it is situated directly across from the castle (beautiful) and has a great view of both the town and the island. It is less than a 5 minutes walk from the bus station. Couldn't be better!

Not all in the hotel is in working order -- the hair dryer in my room is broken, lightbulbs in some of the public washrooms are out, plates are chipped. These are small details, and I'm chalking it up to 'old world charm'.

Room Tip: The lake view rooms are worth it, both for the view and becuase they catch the sun. The other rooms...

We didn't get a lake view room but we still could enjoy the views of Lake Bled from other parts of the hotel.
We found that the view from balcony at the end of the hall 4th floor was so beautiful and good spot for photo shooting. It's nice to have a morning walk by the lake before breakfast as well.

Our room equipped with all necessary things. We just loved the feeling of old times in the room, lobby, hallways. The hotel is under maintenance at the moment so after they re-open, it should be even better. If there's a chance, we would like to go back and stay for few days there.

The only thing i wish to be better is the breakfast though. Not so many choices and hot food.

This hotel has the perfect situation on the lake side looking directly acrosss to the castle. Front rooms shoould be requested as the back ones merely look onto trees across the road and therefore miss the fantastic view across the lake.

Facilities within the hotel are excellent and the staff are extremely helpfull. Their facilty to speak English was wonderful.

Overall an excellent place to stay.

We arrived on christmas eve after a long journey. We had requested a lake view room with a bath and also asked for a high floor .. We got the high floor but no bath so contacted reception. It was no trouble to the staff to relocate us to a much bigger and nicer room with a bath but on a lower floor .The views from our balcony were stunning ,the castle lit up at night and the island sometimes shrouded in early morning mist.
The buffet breakfast had a good choice of hot and cold food ,cereals, fresh fruit and champagne if you wanted it. Freshly prepared eggs etc could be ordered from the kitchen .There was complimentary coffee and cake at 4 o'clock and the evening 4 course meal was enjoyable with a choice of menu. There were no tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms and the t.v.s were the older style c.r.t. The beds had mattresses which could be adjusted in firmness and were comfortable. We did use the swimming pool once and would describe it as exhilarating. It is very cold but there are several saunas to warm up afterwards. Guests can also use the pools and water slide etc of the nearby Hotel Golf which would probably be more suitable for children. We have stayed in many 5 star hotels and would rate this one as 4 star in comparison. The outside appearance is a bit grim but the inside is pleasant and has lovely views from the lounge and bar areas. A real fire in the lounge area would really have made a difference to the overall atmosphere of the hotel especially when coming back from a walk around the lake or a day on the slopes .We enjoyed our stay here and in Bled in particular the low key family christmas activities we joined in with i.e.,seeing Santa and Father Frost ,the traditional dancing and music and the torghlight procession around the lake on Christmas Eve not to forget the mulled wine . All the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful .

Room Tip: If you aren't happy with your room ask for another as all the rooms appear to be different. Lake...
