“Such a great place”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

We have just got back from a five night break at the hotel, it was a really nice place and I could not recommmend this hotel enough. We had a room over looking the park The Grand had lots of character the staff were great and helpful the spa facilities were really good. The massages were out of this world there is a male therapist in his late thirties maybe early 40s who was so good, if you can get him he was great all of the therapists were good but both me and my wife really thought this guy stood out.

We stayed only last week (first week of April 2012) and there appeared to be a mini heat wave which made the stay even better. The island and city all seemed to be gearing up to more activity from mid april onwards with lots of activities on the island still being closed when we were there however this did not bother us and it was nice and peacefull. We love walking and felt very safe on the island even in the early hours of the morning - there is a running track around the island and it seems to almost be in use 24 hours a day so we never felt worried about walking back from the city after a night out.

If the weather had been bad or if you didnt like walking it may be an issue but to be honest I would still have prefered to have stayed here and got a taxi than to have stayed in the main city. The hotel was so peaceful and quiet at night which was great to come back to after a busy day,

We avoided the buffet because of a previous review but the al a cart menu was very good, there was a lot of dark meat on the menu which suited me fine however my wife prefers chicken and fish so we eat at the hotel for two nights as she had struggled to find things she would like. however on venturing into the city this seemed to be more of a theme for budapest and not a reflection on the hotel.

The only downside was hiring bikes from the hotel, there were many places on the island to hire bikes from and they would probably be better to try, I am quite tall so dont expect to have a bike that is the right size however the bikes could have done with a service we had cycled for miles and I found a had a slow puncture several miles away from the hotel, if you are going off island on the bikes go down on the buda side as there is a better cycle track and you can then cross over to pest on one of the bridges further down.

If we ever go back there is no doubt that this is the first place we would want to stay.

First of all, let me state that we do not mind a dary choice (e.g. an average TA mark) if it is for the sake of a « landmark ».

Fort the cons:
- Avoid whatever is served buffet style. The à la carte cuisine however is superb – I shall get back to it.
- The hotel belongs to the Danubius group that is clearly focusing on tour operators whose clients, I suspect, might spend very little time in their hotel.
- In room amenities have known better times. Tired -once beautiful- upholsteries. Very basic bathroom.
- Lounge is rather shabby but not completely unwelcoming.
- Location : well…. As the name says it… on Margriet’s Island. In autumn and summer, it must be fantastic. Not in winter when one has more urban activities. I thougth it would be a good choice for visiting both sides of the bank. In fact it is not. One keeps calling for taxis and cant really get a quick shopping stroll whilst your partner is getting ready in the bathroom. A ride to Andrassy Avenue in Pest is 15mn (at most) and costs anything between 6 and 18 Euros (same ride, same traffic, same time of the day), depending on… go tell… the driver’s mood, the age of the captain, your decolleté…. Speaking of which, we found the 2-222 222 taxi company to be the most reliable and honnest amongst those we called for. Hiring a car would definitely be an option. Budapest seems to be a very easy city to drive in – and to park in !

On with the pros :
- We had a superior room, which was very large, with views over the Danube. That said, I believe all rooms are large and have some view over one bank or the other of the Danube – or at least a large park.
- Insite baths (at the neighbour hotel) that are accessible through underground corridors. We really liked the series of indoor pools. However, the tiled floor around the pool is *extremely* slippy. There is also a small outdoor pool but I don’t think it is the hotel biggest asset. What we also really appreciated ist the fact we could reach the sport/spa area via a second elevator (at the end of the hall that leads to the rooms) therefore avoiding to cross the lobby in robes and swimsuits and being able to shower directly in our room rather than using the public facilities.
- Insite restaurant that is also a favorite amongst locals. We had a go one night and so enjoyed it that we repeated the experience at the end of our stay. They offer an excellent reinterpretation of local dishes, together with a good wine card and live magyar music (except on Thursdays), all of which at a very reasonnable price.
- Staff is very very nice and eager to please.

I do not care very much about star ratings and at times perceive they might even lack in consistency (which I think often applies to hotels in former USSR countries). However I really do not see how Grand Hotel could be rated 5* even as a self proclaimed rating. This wouldn‘t prevent us from going back because it is still a very pleasant hotel with an excellent, lively restaurant. The only aspect we would reconsider is its location. That, really, was not the most convenient for us.

Dear Guest (Nomanslander),

thank you for your comment about your stay with us!

Your review has lots of positive points, nevertheless negative feedbacks are also very important to us so we can use them to improve.

The majority of our Guests are staying for a longer period, some of them coming to us for weeks, to enjoy the beautiful environment and the wide range of spa and wellness services we offer. Our intention is clearly to provide the best service to every type of customers we have.

We really hope you will be also visiting us in the summer or autumn to see the different faces of the Margaret Island.

Best Regards

We're ambivalent about this hotel but on the whole strongly recommend a trial.
About 3 miles out of the centre on an island and is co-joined to a health spa hotel on the same site (which was available to all guests - although some facilities naturally have a charge). Bus and metro journey can take half an hour to an hour depending on connections. Taxi costs about £25. You can walk up the riverside from the town centre. The views are magnificent except for the more urban/commercial last half mile. This takes about one a a half hours. The island is at least a couple of miles long and has a number of pathways and walks along the Danube. It's a joggers locale.
Staid, comfortable, solid and quiet. Well mannered clientele. Charming restaurant with nice menu and delightful spacious comfortable bar.(However does it need the TV?) Efficient and pleasant staff. Housekeeping orderly and well managed. There is a jolly, rumbustuous, Hungarian gipsy/Bohemian band in residence at dinner most nights. Once heard for a few nights this can be a little wearisome. However, most guests appeared delighted to be serenaded by the violinist....and they take requests!
Rooms are spacious and old worldly with much red and gold tapestry along with solid furniture , heavy curtains and subtle lighting. All the usual mod cons were available. Plenty of storage space.
Somewhat pricey with a hefty service charge applicable across the board for most services. As we were not there on a business account this slightly clouded the issue.

Sadly, Budapest in general has gone the same way as many other European locations and the impression at times from some establishments is that the imperative is to let profit be the driving force at the expense of value now and then. That said, shop around. Some of the pubs cafes and restaurants in town are excellent value and some are robbers.
Architecture is phenomenal and there are many sites of interest.
All in all, the Hungarians are a cheerful enough bunch of folk and predominantly friendly.
We might go back sometime but we'd probably trade the winter for the summer.
Not sure about trading the Danubius for nearer town. The isolation, decent behaviour, and charm are attractive. It's a matter personal taste. The town is noisy and bustling. Looking out of the bedroom on to a rising or setting sun on Margitziget Danube sure beats the rush hour traffic!.
Give it a whirl. Then write up your impressions.

Room Tip: Get a river view.

I recently spent a week here (November 2011) recovering from jet lag with a package which included massage and "gymnastic sessions" - the latter were more related to physiotherapy sessions. Half board was also included - mostly taken as breakfast and dinner.
I was very impressed with how well everything was organised - the hotel is like stepping back in time - the grandeur is quite faded however, the 'bones' are still good. The room was very clean and comfortable - in comparison with other hotels, also quite large. The food was excellent as was the service.

The island itself is beautiful - a real green sanctuary although I would suspect that in summer, it would be over-run with people. And yes, it is a long walk to the city centre but for the type of stay I was seeking - perfect.
So, I spent a week 'wallowing' in the thermal spring pool, having massages, doing aqua aerobics and attending gymnastic sessions. and yes, I plan to return!

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel in November of 2011 for one night. We both love to jog and as it happens the location of this hotel is absolutely perfect on Margaret Island, because there is a soft surface running track that goes around the island’s parameter for about 5KM. The island is as beautiful as everybody else says it is. It is the perfect place in the winter or any of the other 3 seasons to have a relaxing and enjoyable run. Now let’s talk about the hotel itself. We were given room 389 on the 3rd floor, not far from the elevators. Checked in late that night so we did not get a chance to see the outside of the hotel until next day, which by the way is very nice. However upon entering the room, we were a little bit surprised by the condition, the old look and this sour smell we could not figure out where it was coming from. Later we have found the source of the smell, once we went to bed. It was the sheets, the bedcover and the pillowcases. The furniture is old and worn. The 23” LCD TV felt really out of place with the furniture that looked like it was the era of Louis the XIV. But seriously, I do not like to write bad reviews, however this one I had to write about. The light red and faded carpeting did not help either, especially my wife’s allergies. The dust was literally flying up from beneath our feet after each step. The bathroom was the best part of the room, all the way to the point when my wife has discovered ants coming out of the pipe behind the toilet. That was next morning after we got back to the room from our morning run. There was a tub with a shower in it and I have to say that the shower was excellent. Other than the ants, the bathroom was clean. I really do think that the condition this room was in, the 75EUR price, without breakfast was not a fair one. I can only speak for this one room, since this was my first time at this property, but I would think you will find the same condition in all of them.
The common areas of the hotel are nice and upscale, projecting a grand image the hotel name talks about. One more thing I wanted to mention. I did report the ants at the front desk, the fact was acknowledged, but nothing was offered in compensation to us other than a thank you.
I hope in the near future the Danubius Hotel chain, who manages this hotel is willing to put some money into this property so the rooms reflect the same image as the common areas.
For now, if you want to stay on Margaret Island, I would recommend for you to stay next door at the Danubius Health Spa Resort, which was built in 1979 and renovated in 2001.
